Hi, I hope this thread is ok to post this question. A coworker and I found this quarter. It is a hawaii State Quarter and on the face of the quarter there is a back of a nickel stamped over it. I'm going to attach a photo of both the front and back in hopes to get some answers. We were told once that it is impossible in mint for this error to happen but the stamp just doesn't look like it was tampered with and truly looks like some type of mint error. Please let me know any information you may know about this issue. Thanks so much! Ryan *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I am going to say it looks like someone put two coins in a vice between some leather. If you rotate your photo 180 degrees and then flip it horizontally you will see that the writing for the nickel is backwards. (As expected from a transfer). The leather would absorb any pressure and keep the other side of the coin nicer. So it looks like PMD (post mint damage) to me, which would mean it does not have any value beyond the 25 cents face.

I'm sure some others will chime in soon. I think a lot of people are traveling this week where the 4th was in the middle of the week.

I'd say it looks like someone glued a nickel to the quarter and the nickel was later pealed off, leaving the glue stuck to the quarter.

oh it definitely isn't glue... there is a major impression in the quarter.

It's really probably glue. I know you don't think it's glue, but a coin like this appears here every month or so, and the poster insists it's not glue, and then it turns out to be glue.
Try soaking it in acetone, the glue should lift off.

Your coin would be impossible as an error. A nickel was glued to your quarter and what you see is the impression of the nickel left in the residual glue. If you still do not believe me, soak your coin in water. If no change, use a solvent such as acetone or even fingernail polish remover.
