I just went by a bank, and saw a teller's tray with a pile of silver halves in it. I asked for some, but she got smart and told me I couldn't have any! I know they roll hunt, too, but I've never had a teller ever be so rude. Edited by CPC24 07/06/2012 6:12 pm

What would you have done if you were the teller ? Ha, if it were me they wouldn't have been in the tray in the first place.

Yeah, she should've at least hidden them! I know they do that.

Something similar happened to me, I saw a bunch of silver quarters in the teller's tray, and she refused to give them to me, so, the next time I saw the silver rims of half dollars in the tray, I didn't mention them at first. I simply made small talk trying to be as pleasant as possible, and the teller happily gave them to me. Sometimes, its simply being nice to people.

Usually, I'm nice and make small talk. I often get silver dimes that way. This lady flat out told me she wouldn't give them away! I know why; they were frosty white!

I would agree that it was rude on the part of the teller... but I don't know if I agree that they HAVE to give away their silvers. My gf snatches coins she sees go into the tip jar at work, and she is in competition with another coworker who collects coins as well.
I agree that it works better to just ask for change. Especially for quarters. My banks know I collect coins... but they also know I have a huge laundry bill I have to meet with quarters. Making small talk, NEVER mentioning silver coins, and keeping the topic simple as you are a coin collector looking for key dates for your album goes a long way.
The only other thing I can suggest is going to a different bank? Just like I would try to avoid a bank that another collector went to... isn't the idea the same if the teller IS the other coin collector? I know I have better luck at some branches as my "buy" branches because the tellers just don't care to look at coins in their tray.

I go to many different banks and never mention I'm looking for silver. Most tellers have no idea about it. I've actually had decent luck at this one branch. I seem to find 40% halves there often. I understand that she doesn't have to sell them to me, but she didn't have to make a smart remark, either.

@CPC24: I agree, she didn't have to make a rude remark. I dislike it when tellers give me attitude (my favorite was one of my normal banks the teller had to go into the vault to get enough pennies to equal $25 bucks. The eye rolling, the over the top sighs, etc.
It is frustrating, and not fun to go through. I experience the same kind of attitude when I go to comic book conventions and ask for specific comics, and I get met with the same attitude.
And totally surprised that by not asking for silver, but asking for change in the form of halves, netting you with a negative response. =(

What worked for me was to ask them (teller) out for dinner. I can't do that anymore as I married one.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

While one could argue that it is the teller's job to be nice and polite to anyone they serve, don't we as a customer have a moral duty to be polite back? Maybe there is a better way to explain my above point... but 8:45 AM at work on a Saturday dealing with crabby clients isn't the time or place for me to come up with it.

The tellers at the Whitney Bank on Nelson Road in Lake Charles, Louisiana have all turned evil against me as well. They now refuse to give me any pennies and even asked me why I insist on banking inside rather than using the drive through. So yes, I know exactly where you all are coming from when it comes to rude bank tellers and managers. The worst part of it all for me is that Whitney Bank is/was my primary bank. Well no more! I am moving on. The good news is that another bank across the street has friendly tellers. They save all the customer penny rolls for me and after two visits that yielded me $85 worth of those incredible customer wrapped rolls... I gave the tellers two dozen glazed donuts this morning. Here is a picture of what my new bank has been giving me at every visit:
