Today has definitely been one of a learning experience today. I might also say this is kind of a introduction in a way as much as a post about my find since I am brand new to these forums. I made my first post today ever on the forum about that chinese "practice money" I found while taking a walk, and 2 hours ago I decided I wanted to recheck my dime rolls I got from the bank the other day after I learned about the 1982 no mintmark dime. I used to think that the only Roosevelt that were worth anything were the silver ones, but after doing a search online about key dates, I noticed that there was some talk about a no mintmark dime from 1982. That got me excited because I did see some dimes dated 1982 in my rolls, but I did not bother to look at the mintmarks at all. So I looked through them again, maybe 15 or so rolls, and found 2 1982 D dimes through the first 10, so that was disappointed, but then through another roll I got a 1982P, and then with just a couple rolls left I got a 1982 with no mintmark! I was literally cheering "Yeah!", because I literally have never owned a key date coin before - just old, ordinary, or silver ones. So if you can guess, I am a relatively new collector. I've collected for a few years, but mainly just silver or any old date even though I know nothing about them! I'm also wondering about the last couple dozen of rolls I searched and dumped before learning about those 1982 no dates. I hope they have nothing exciting in them!  . Anyways, here is my find that got me so excited: *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***   I'm sorry if the image quality is bad, but I'm still not sure of the best way to photograph a coin, so I just put it in the scanner and scanned it up so you guys can see it.  If you guys could make a guess on grade and how much it would be worth that would be great. I know it goes for 300+ at MS 65 in the RedBook, so I figure this one is maybe worth 100 at the lower grade it is. I'm not sure where to put a coin like this without losing it. I'm not the most responsible collector out there yet lol. Lastly, do you guys reckon I should slab a coin like this? I've never slabbed so I'm pretty clueless in that regard. Nice find. It looks like a nice low end AU (maybe AU-53). Most dealers will only pay 60 or $70 for it but it would do better on ebay. I've never heard of these being faked but mint marks are easily removed so you'll want to be sure that no trace remains and the area is pristine. These come as strong strikes and weak strikes and this one is probably a strong strike. A better picture would help with authentication but most coins have to be seen in hand for grading and authentication. Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Since a dime is nominally 0.705 inch, I would recommend that you scan at 4200 DPI (or your scanner's max if it is less then that) and then make a shrunk image that is 800 pixels square and then adjusting JPEG settings until the file is just less than 100KB to upload here. If you can't get a good image at 800 pixels try 500, anything less than that probably doesn't help in grading. I always scan new coins at 7200 DPI (less for the 3 inch AtBs) and store raw BMPs zipped. I then use that image to shrink and process as needed for sharing and everyday viewing. I am also now taking pictures since I bought a modern digital SLR (Canon T2i, 21MP w/ EFS 18-55 & 18-135 zooms and an old Canon FD 35-105 zoom that has superior optics). My new phone has an 8MP camera that does a good job with macro shots for on-the-go shots. The scanner has served me well (HP Scanjet 4890) but with a scanner you are very limited with what you can do with lighting so the cameras definitely do bring something to the table. With the camera, a tripod is a must to get good, flat macro pictures. A dedicated macro lens is great if you can afford one, otherwise you can make a "poor man's macro" with a good lens and a reversing ring.

These are quite scarce in circulation. There are lots of people here who search a large volume of dimes and never found one. Amazing case of beginner's luck I guess!

wow, I must be luckier than I realize then! I think I may try to figure out how to up the quality on scanner pictures, or maybe use my sisters camera with the macro lenses that I am not supposed to touch :P . That scanned picture truly does not do it justice, so I will work on that.

I'm afraid I have some minor trepidations about this. It's probably authentic but it doesn't look like the die. It's high end XF and nice even wear (the dark spot will come off in acetone). It is a strong strike if real and a very late die state. I have seen even later die states so this doesn't concern me especially.
