I bought this coin several years ago and haven't looked at it carefully until I posted it today to the 'days of large cents' thread. It came to me a SEGS slab graded at MS62 N-14 variety and the seller said it came from the Randall Hoard. I thought it was too generous a grade and following the advice of the experts on this forum I bought the coin and not the holder. I did take a few minutes today to read my recently purchased Wright book of mid year cents. It seems to say that many of this variety that are truly MS appear to some collectors to appear much lower. So, maybe I was wrong to use PCGS Photograde online in this case? My question is - do you feel the grade is MS62 for this coin or ? Member ANA and EAC "You got to lose to know how to win". It looks MS to me, but I'll guess MS-60BN. Some softness in the strike but totally normal for these old girls. It's a great coin.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess AU58 on this one. The wear on the high points of the hair might disqualify it to grade into the MS's. Beautiful coin though, I'm envious!

Cipster, very nice cent. I have no clue for grade but a question Quote: I did take a few minutes today to read my recently purchased Wright book of mid year cents. Is this "the Cent Book" by John Wright? Where did you get it and how much? Thanks for any information.

Quote: Is this "the Cent Book" by John Wright? Where did you get it and how much? I bought it on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-CENT-BO...em5ae73a77e0$87.50 I'm also looking for a copy of "The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840 - 1857" by Bob Grellman. It's $100.00 so I'd like to find a used copy. If anyone knows of a source please let me know.

I agree with MS60... I see no wear, strike issues but no wear.

Looks to be nice luster remaining and yes, strike issues but I see no wear. MS61

MS-60 Weak strike. Some might interpret as wear the softness at the top of the hair bun on the obverse or the vague details on the top leaves above the "CA" in America on the reverse. But I just thing these are the results of a soft strike. All this can change once the coin is in hand and under a 30X scope.
