I was looking through my collection of centennial pennies today when I noticed this one. It has what appears to be a large die crack on the reverse. It also has a strange mark at the top which passes through the lettering obscuring most of it. I think this may be a coin Struck Through Grease on a cracked die but I am not certain. The coin also appears to be struck slightly off centre, which can be seen at the top of the coin. Is there any other explanation for these unusual features? I don't think it is PMD since the coin was also struck slightly off centre.
The circular mark cutting on the wing is PMD without any doubt. The damage on the lettering looks like PMD as well but I would prefer to see the coin in hand to be sure.
I am wondering if this could be mint damage because the raised line follows roughly the same path as the extra line on the rim caused by the slightly off centre strike. Since the line is on one of the low parts of the coin, does anyone have any theories as to what could have caused this damage if it is PMD?
