This beautiful 99.99%, fine silver coin features an image from the 2011 Canadian Geographic Wildlife Photograph of the Year, taken by Robert Ganz of Montreal, Quebec. Mintage of this $10 coin is limited to 7,500 coins worldwide.
Well, it was a lot of fun to spend the day at the Mint and the Museum, and the video is cool for me. As for the coin, well, I bought a bunch......how often do you get a coin minted with one of your photos on it?
Remember this was a contest...and it was simply a wildlife contest, the subjects didn't even have to be Canadian Wildlife necessarily. I think that given that they had to choose a winner, the Mint did a great job turning it into a coin.
Would I have liked some green and gold accents on the bug and grass? Yes of course! I think it would have had more impact.
Robert Congrats on taking such an awesome picture. I wanted to get in on the competition but couldn't find the time. I am a lover of wildlife photography. I have been for years. If I would have won a competition like that I would be tootin my horn forever :)
Robert, what part of Canada do you live in? Are you local to the Ottawa area, or did you get a free trip to the mint?

Hi SPP...I live in Montreal, so it was a short hop over to Ottawa. Actually it was for the Museum of Nature opening exhibit, and I asked the Mint if I could get a tour for the same day...it all worked out wonderfully!!
@RobertG: Congratulations on winning the photo contest and getting your picture struck as a coin. Based on the video, it appears to be one of the biggest thrills of your life! Wonderful!
It's beautiful coins like this one that make the hobby an interesting and enjoyable pastime!

Robert, do you come to Ottawa often? It would be pretty cool for you to attend one of the Ottawa Numismatic Society meetings, for that would be a grand show-and-tell item and story to share...
