I have two and this one is in need of some care. Can I get the gluey paper stuff off the reverse with an acetone dip? Where do I even get acetone, and how can I safely use it?

Also, on the front there are several raised marks that I think look like what could be die breaks as opposed to post mint damage. But, I'm new. Let me know what you think.

Did you soak it in distilled water? Try that first. If it doesn't work, you can get acetone at any hardware store. Get the pure stuff, not nail polish remover.

There are a number of threads on safely using acetone. Just do a search and you'll find the info you need.

I haven't done anything to it except break it out of the 2x2 to take pictures. Not sure distilled water will work because to the right of the big gluey paper is some yellowy glue resin without paper. I think this needs some stronger. But hey, water can't hurt it, right?

I also have a Morgan that has a huge thing of paper stuck to it. Distilled water may actually work on that one.

Qtip and acetone should make quick work of that.

The line through the T in TRVST, thats a die crack. The other, that looks like a scratch to me, but not sure.

Looks like old glue on the back, try what smokeriderdon suggested with Acetone.

What would possess someone to glue a Peace dollar or morgan to paper? I just don't get it.

Maybe it was placed in a folder and the coin kept on falling out.

It could be. My understanding is that my father in law's maternal grandfather was a Maitre' Di in New York City for several years after he immigrated from Italy. He received Morgans as tips and he just kept them. I guess the same is true for the Peace dollars. When his grandmother died in 1986, his grandfather remarried shortly thereafter. His grandfather gave all of these coins to my father in law because he didn't want the coins to be apart of the new marital assets. He was a collector, but never stored them properly. He just kept them in stacks on the floor. My understanding is that he was solely a coin roll hunter and never purchased or sold any coins, he just found and kept.

Could be the remains of an old advertising sticker Back in the early 1900's it was not that unusual for a business to put adhesive stickers on silver dollars as a form of advertising. Sometimes it would be for a business, sometimes it might have been a political campaign, or a statement to a community to show the impact a business had on the community. (similar to those businesses that may from time to time pay their employees in dollar coins or two dollar bills etc.)
