I am kind of new to coin collecting and I see that you can buy coins on ebay from this sight, how do you know if the coins are faked? Any opinions? Thanks

Ok, thanks for the input. Have you heard anything about ICG coins graders. I have recently bought a coin that was graded by them. Thanks

If you look up ebay seller oozentoo - you can trust this seller. I cannot say enough about his honesty and integrity. He is the owner of Antietam Coin exchange in Hagerstown,MD. He has a great reputation in the coin hobby and with dealers in (at least) PA and MD. I also like him b/c, as the sign in the front window of his store says, "Welcome to a local police owned business!" When in his store, I have had him tell me things about coins I buy from him, like what he paid for the coin (and the auction he got it from so I could see what he is saying is valid), that is abnormal to hear coming from a seller. When in the store, if I tell him I'd like one of his ebay items, he has automatically computed and cut from the the price anything ebay fees & shipping would have cost him (and then knocked some off of the price). He did this the very first time I met him.

Sticking to graded coins by PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG should remove almost all of the probability of purchasing a fake. The thing is that counterfeits are faking the slabs as well so you have to watch out for those. Being able to authenticate coins doesn't come overnight. It take years of experience looking and studying genuine as well as counterfeit coins. Buying coins slabbed either one of the 4 companies above and from a reputable seller should ensure that the coins are authentic.

You will find a lot of info about buying coins anywhere right here on this forum. As already noted if you plan on buying coins over the internet, ebay or other source, attempt to only buy those authenticated by the TPGS's previously mentioned. However, this does not mean 100% full proof. China is now known to be producing faked coins in faked slabs with the names of some of those TPGS's on them. So although much safer to get one in a slab, not really 100% sure anymore. It is interesting if you go to Google and type in Coin grading services or TPGS's, you could find there are many, many, many now in existance. Some may be being made right next door to you in a basement.

On the bright side China still hasnt figured out the labels correctly yet. But without change its only a matter of time till they get it right

Quote: how do you know if the coins are faked? Unfortunately, experience, which is something a new collector does not have. How do you get experience and learn to spot fakes? By close examination of lots and lots of genuine coins over time. There is no shortcut
