I was coin roll hunting today to fill my Whitman 1959 to present album. I picked out a 1969s. This is the first S to go in the album!

I was so happy to see something in the 60s, but elated with the s! Sick of seeing the 1982s.

Congrats! The 82's are annoying until you find some nice, MS red coins....especially the tougher 1982P SDC. In completing my Memorial cent BU roll set, I was forced to buy a roll of the 82P SDC because they are nearly impossible to find in circulation.

I don't have a scale to weigh the pennies so I've largely skipped over the 1982. I guess I could put them aside until I can weigh them. I have found a couple small dates, but no clue if they are copper or not.

With the 69S, always look carefully for the famous Doubled Die.

You can also drop them on a hard surface and listen. Copper makes a nice ring and zinc makes a thud.

Quote: With the 69S, always look carefully for the famous Doubled Die. Basically zero chance of that....plus, as I recall, the master die had doubling on it which causes a LOT of confusion for novice collectors. The true, hub doubled, working die 69S is an extremely rare coin.

Badthad, I will test out my 82 pennies that way. Granite will work?
Only 31 identified by PCGS. Rare indeed.

The way I learned to tell 1982s apart is I got a few pennies where I knew for sure their compositions, closed my eyes, and tried sorting them by sound. I kept doing this until I got them all right. Then, I'd throw a 1982 in, see which pile it landed in, maybe repeat, and after a while you'll get the knack of it :)

Weezer... just flip the penny with your thumb (flick it in the air) If you hear a solid ring, it's copper, if you hear a thud, it's not. You can compare the sound with the pre-82 and post-82 pennies for sound comparison. After you do one box of pennies and flick all of the 82s, you'll only need to flick it once and you will know if it's copper or not :)
