Its certified by PCI as AU55. I know PCI is not a top TPG. The seller has a 7 day no question return policy and its priced at $165. I would like to hear your opinion. Thank you.

In terms of detail it looks like a solid AU-50 or better. If luster is strong then AU-55 is not out of the question. I'd be most concerned about the possibility of cleaning. Can you see hairline scratches in the fields when you tilt the coin under a light? The fields around Liberty look like they might be hairlined but I can't be sure. Also, the dig next to the date is in a "prime focal area" and potentially will reduce the value. $165 isn't too bad for a no-problem AU but if there are hairlines, or if the dig bothers you, I would recommend that you return this one.

I don't have it in hand, its on ebay and it seems to be a scanned image so I can't say anything about luster.

shatsi, I downloaded the pictures and did some adjusting.I'm also seeing quit a number of fine scratches.I think it has been cleaned, unless the scratches are on the slab, but I don't thinks so.The coin itself looks AU50+ so it would be a real shame if it was cleaned. I would ask the seller if they thought the coin has been cleaned, just to see what kind of responce you get.If the seller knows your going to return a cleaned coin, there more likely to tell you up front.

After looking at the sellers pics....I'm still not sure. I will be interested in what their response is.

Hmmm. That's Ernie's "better-quality coins" username on ebay. His grading and pricing are enthusiastic, but his integrity is not in question. I'd trust him, but there is still the question of whether or not PCI caught any cleaning. That is, by a wide margin, the single highest mintage issue of any Seated quarter. The price is full retail for an AU55. I think I'd pass on this one if it were me; if you want an 1876, there will certainly be better.

What seems strange to me is why a dealer would want or have to use two different names to sell.

He's not the only one I know of. They're serving a specific clientele, with many repeat buyers. Note that both of his usernames have a lot of repeats - 50% of "Ernie's" sales are repeat customers, and about a third of "ebwcoin's." I think it might be about not overwhelming their more discerning customers, who have them on Favorite Buyer status, with widgets. I just noticed - he's been on ebay since it was only a few months old.

I wouldn't give that price for that coin. I have no quarrel with the grade, but this coin looks as though it has been cleaned. An AU coin this old just doesn't look like this after any circulation at all and the digs reduce the value. I agree with TLS!
