I see the term here occasionally and what I gather is that these are certified coins that are rare only because there are so few in that poor a condition. Do I have this right?

Yea thats basically what it is. Its just the most worn coin you can possibly find but the coins have to have been naturally worn down so you cant just sand blast away and make the best set ever. The lower they grade the better it is

the appeal of a low-ball set is to have a collection of naturally worn coins that carry a story and history, unlike, say, a BU Morgan dollar that probably sat in a vault for eighty years.

A low ball set is actually MUCH harder to complete than a high grade set. I'm always looking for AG Lincolns for mine.

Hmm. I have no shortage of crappy coins. Should I get them slabbed?

I generally see the lowball sets go in folders, my favorite are the sets in the old blue Whitman bookshelf albums from the 50's and 60's. Getting lowball coins graded is a fun challenge as well, there are tons of pop 1's out there because nobody in their right mind would want to get such coins graded.

Look up some pictures of coins from lowball sets to see how worn they are. If youre coins are legitimately that worn that theyd grade that bad then yea I would get them slabbed

I guess I'm not in my right mind, personally, I don't slab a coin unless its VG8 or below.
So by all means OldSkoolMadSkilz, SLAB THEM!

Anyone has a statistic for slabbed FR2 1923-S Peace dollars? I'm wondering if mine is worth sending for slabbing if I had the opportunity (though I'm not quite sure if the slabbing company would notice that there's a S on it).

Unrelatedly (and more a theoretical question than anything else): anyone knows which is the lowest grade where VAMming is possible?

My views on the topic ...

There are many collectors who enjoy the hunt for honestly circulated coins ... and I am one of them.

There is a special joy to be had when owning a well circulated 'low ball' coin ... holding the coin in hand and wondering the stories the coin could tell ... amazed at how it survived so long to achieve its proud condition.

The vast majority of low ball collectors are not interested in slabbing the coins as trophies ... despite the comments shared in this thread.

You can if you want to ... but you are missing the point IMHO why honestly circulated coins appeal to many of us.

I am personally chasing a low-ball collection of classic USA silver commemorative ... I've been on the hunt for over 3 years and may never complete the collection.

My coins are raw in a Dansco album ... and this set is very much more difficult to achieve than my complete MS type set.

Anyone with a large enough wallet can purchase MS coins ... it takes patience and dedication to find the low-ball examples.

IMHO ... that is the true nature of this collecting hobby ... patience and knowledge of self.

That's my opinion on the topic.
