I just purchased a Canon T2i digital SLR camera. This will be my first "really fancy" camera so I'm still learning about it. The company I bought it from, 42photo.com, called me to confirm my online order but also to sell me a memory card for the camera. At first I was a little surprised the camera didn't come with at least a small memory card to get started but the sales person said none of the cameras any more come with a memory card. He said I would need a 700X memory card for the camera to work properly and to work up to it's full potential. They seemed a little pricey to me so I declined till I could get little more information.

What kind of memory cards are you guys using with your digital SLR camera?

Well, he got the "no bundled cards any more" part right.

With 18MP in-hand, I'd lean towards no less than a 16GB SDHC card. You're looking at close to 10MB per shot, so 16GB will give you about 1500 shots. Ridiculous, right? Well, for less than $20, why not?

Look for a speed rating of no less than Class 6. The ratings you'll find available here are Class 6, Class 10, and Ultra-High Speed (UHS) Class 1, capable of data transfer speeds so ludicrous that you won't need it in your camera. But it's fast enough to stream HD video in real time straight from the card, although you'll want a USB 3.0 port to stick it into.

If I had to buy another card today, I'd probably buy this one:

UHS-1, a brand I trust, and a little more than half the price I paid for the Lexar card I currently use. Heck, I may buy one for myself - at that price it's a throwaway.

Buy a good card to start and cheaper ones later if you need them. A faster write speed will clear your buffer quicker when shooting multi frames per second for sports action shots, wildlife, etc. I use this card on my 24MP Sony (12 frames per second) and it works well: Sandisk 16 GB SDHC 95Mb/s Memory Card Extreme Pro Class 10 UHS-I only $43 at B&H Photo.

When I was shooting sports photography for a living, and memory cards were really expensive, this site was the only one I trusted when needing a new card, they still keep it updated, so you can see what cards will preform the best and meet your needs. And Rob is a great photographer and all around shooter, I like to support him anyway I can.

It's just amazing how the cards have gotten so large and so fast, yet so inexpensive. Blows the mind, actually.

If you shoot video and sports with a heavy trigger finger, you need the fast cards. If you shoot landscapes or coins and press the button once every few minutes, any card will do. The store is not trying to cheat you but hoping to avoid you returning the camera as defective when you shoot video on a old fashioned slow card. I'm glad they stopped bundling cards since I prefer selecting what fits my needs.
