So I went and bought my first box today, and I chose pennies because it's within my budget.
I've only done four rolls so far, and I haven't found much to speak of. I did find four Canadian pennies, 1962x2, 1978, 2001.
Any particulars I should definitely look for in those first four rolls before I go through the rest of the box, as far as LMCs go? Edited by SaintRidley 07/19/2012 7:55 pm

Do you already have a list of varieties that you're looking for? If not, check out coppercoins.com and linconlncentresource.com. Don't expect to find keepers in every roll or anything. Aside from the dozen or so wheat cents I find per box, I only find a really notable variety every few boxes.

Just whatever major varieties there are. I know there are some prominent double die dates that I'd like to check, but I'm not much of a varieties guy to begin with. Mostly, I'm happy for any wheat cents and Canadian cents I get, and if I find a really particularly nice looking coin that appears to be uncirculated I might pull it, but I don't normally put moderns in my collection unless they're NIFC, so not likely even if I spot one. Did just find my first Wheat cent of the box, a 56D. Going to go through for major double die varieties on a second pass. Updated tally of finds after 12 rolls: Canadian pennies: 1962x2 1969 1978x2 1867-1992 2001x2 American: 1930D 1945 1948D 1950D 1956D 1957D 1969S 1970Sx2 1974S

Once you start looking for errors and varieties, you'll become addicted. It's a disease, lol.

Definitely don't get discouraged. I go through $75 or so in cents per week, and I can go a couple of weeks without finding even a better minor variety. Enjoy the hunt!

Here's the first 70S. As of roll 15, I found another 70S, so here is the most recent find and then a photo of the three together. Last update for the night. I've finished 20 rolls and run out of spare pennies to replace my pulls, so I'll be getting more when I stop by home tomorrow. I keep finding 1970 S every few rolls, so eventually I'll just sort those ones out and make sure they're set in a way I can identify them so I can run pictures up here so I can get help determining if I have any small dates. Updated tally after 20 rolls in this box: Canadian pennies: 1962x2 1968 1969 1977 1978x2 1867-1992x2 1999 2001x2 American: 1919S 1930D 1941 1942 1944S 1945 1946 1948D 1950D 1951D 1953D 1956D 1957D 1969Sx2 1970Sx6 1971S 1974Sx5

I don't imagine this many coins is typical at all, on any of the counts.

Yeah. I stopped by home today to drop off the finds from the first 20 rolls and replenish my supply of replacement pennies, so I won't be able to individually photograph and examine all nine until Monday at the earliest. I'm currently house sitting until tomorrow for a friend and then I'm going up to my in-laws' place tomorrow night until late Sunday (her bridal shower is Sunday afternoon and I'll be taking out the chainsaw to work on our cake stand).
I doubt I have a small date. I really wish, though.
