Does anyone know of a good web site for researching the actual physical process of minting a coin? I'm particularly interested in photos of the minting process.

Thanks,

the US Mint does have an education section. It may be for young viewers, but it should at least have some info useful.

Thanks for this. I really enjoyed watching the dollars piling out. This gives me the basic steps. I wonder how the stamps were manufactured before the tech solutions were thought up?

I assume way back in the day it was done by hand, maybe some sort of hand cranked systems or molds

I read the stamping of the coins used the muscle of for men to turn the screw of mold to coin. I would like to see one of those.

They were engraved by hand.

Enjoyed the site. Didn't know that the mint had a resident eagle and dog.

It's funny how this is the case. I'm working in Japan for a while and I have a pocket full of change. 1434 yen. 500, 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1 yen denominations. About eighteen dollars. And there's a good chance I will use this by this evening. This could be because I've no Japanese debit cards and pretty much need to use cash. But on my walk to the hotel tonight, I'll pass about 25 vending machines.

In the states, if I end up the day with coins in my pocket, they go in the coin jar and I never leave home with coins in the morning.

There is nothing new under the sun. It is for this precise reason that today Morgan dollars are such a popular collection, easy to find in high grade. A silver lining to that cloud, as it were.
