I just wanted the input of the forum before I make the decision whether or not not to get this. I really does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling, I have some concerns. Thanks for your input.

Nothing screams fake to me on the outset. What makes you think it might not be real? Here's mine for comparison: 1838 Half Dollar

with Moe, it doesn't look like a fake. Although it may have been cleaned at one point. Looks like there are some hairline scratches on the coin. If it's not a coin that you really love, why not wait for another?

Quote: If it's not a coin that you really love, why not wait for another? Point taken. The color and the off-center strike made me a little leary of this one. I am not well versed in bust halves and dollars so I approach those with caution. And thanks for your input guys. If the bids do not go too high I may just grab it.

Nose on liberty and end of beak look suspect. Closer pics?

This. Looks original, looks hairlined, the off-center strike adds character. Probably not the coin for the hole in your 7070, but worth having in the collection at the right price.

The spacing of the lettering and date numbers look like they're slightly different between the two coins. The "I" in Pluribus in the real coin is directly below the T in States. The top coin the "I" is to the left of the "T" in States. Also, the nose looks different between the two coins as do the numbers between the two...

What does the lettered edge look like? The coin looks okay to me other than maybe an old cleaning. The wear looks genuine and not what would be coming out of a Chinese back alley mint. If you have concerns though, walk away from it and find one you have no doubts about. Too many Bust halves out there to buy one you just don't have a good feeling about.

Quote: does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling This is always a good reason to not buy a coin. Even if there's nothing "wrong" with a coin, there are all sorts of reasons why you might be unhappy with it. Aside from huge rarities which are never available, another example will eventually come along that makes you feel warm and fuzzy. Always feel warm and fuzzy.

The top coin the "I" is to the left of the "T" in States. Welcome to the world of die varieties. These dies were made up by hand with the central device being punched into the die with a press and the rest of the lettering etc being punched into the die by hand. The scroll was not part of the central device and was added by hand so its position, and the position of the letters on it with respect to the letters above, will vary for every die made. There were 20 different reverse dies used in 1836.

Makes sense that the scroll was punched. Could you imagine trying to carve raised letters into the die?

Your coin looks real to me, other than it having been cleaned at sometime, looks great to me.
