Going through my old change I found a 1987 RED (it's clearly red) penny and feels thinner then the other "Brown" pennies. It also has a non-circular edge on it...

I'm new here so I'm just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before?

The 1982-1996 Canadian pennies are thinner than the 1981 and earlier pennies. They should weigh 2.5 grams (compared to 3.24 grams for 1979 and earlier, 2.8 grams for 1980-81). Since they are the same diameter, it would follow that they should be thinner. Also, they are 12-sided and this was apparently done to help the blind identify the coin. It doesn't sound like you have anything out of the ordinary there.
