Hello, I recently adquired a coin, it is apparently an 8 Reales 1767 Potosi spanish coin. I would greatly appreciate information on the value of this coin and whether it is real or not. Thanks a lot, update: Added picture of the edges.  Marcelo   Edited by mreyes

I'll have the gram weight tomorrow. I'll go to a jewell store to have to coin weight and to verify it is real silver.

As good as it looks I would think it would test as silver if the jeweler could test the specific gravity also? SG. being one of the most definitive tests for % alloy XRF and a new one TFDwall may help also. see this post ON CCF Spain Philippines 8 Reales F7o c/m on Peru 8 reales 1833 I am a student Here at CCF  some/most of the experts are discussing real and counterfeits there  |

This coin is a fake. It does not have the look of a real Potosi Pillar dollar. So much wrong I don't know where to start.

Mathieu, I actually live near PotosÃ, and got it from an antique shop near there.
@jfransh, I did compare it myself to another picture and found some differences in the font-type edges mostly. I though it may due to aging, but sadly it appears to be a copy. But please do share your thoughts so I can recognize the real thing next time.
It is real silver, the weight is ok, the size is ok. I guess they used a real less valuable coin and stamp on it the 1767 face.

mreyes : it's more than just a changed date, the details of your coin are all wrong. I didn't wanted to be alarming and asked for some help to be sure. mreyes It is absolutely a forgery but it is one I would love to own a copy of. Where did you get it from?
The dies are apparently engraved from scratch.
Never seen a counterfeit of this series made in such an incorrect way. Most of the tourist type fakes are wrong because they use Modern Techniques to make the dies. The die maker here seems to have gone old school.

Thank you for your comments Swamper Bob, I should have look at it twice before I bought it. I got it here in Bolivia where I live. I guess I felt that due to the proximity of Potosà it was possible to be lucky enough to still find some real pieces in the little shops downtown. If it is made here a silver artisan should have made it. There still are quite gifted silver/tin crafts men around here.
