Hey all, I am planning on coming to australia in November for a year on a working holiday visa ;) So I`ve been trying to acquaint myself with aussie coins and bills. One thing I`m curious about is if you still see the federation $5 in circulation...or is that something I will have to get an a coin store or ebay. Thanks!

If you look really hard for them then yes, 2 have turned up in circulation.

Hi if you were to find a federation $5 you would be very lucky most people took them out of circulation so your best bet would be a coin store

You MAY find one. Not likely. I haven't seen one for years and lately I've been noodling a lot of $5 notes. I only have one which a bank teller pulled from a bunch of $5 notes a few months back. So they are out there just not very many at all.

A workmate of mine found one this year and let me have it for $5. Before that it had been years since I'd seen one in circulation. I can't remember what the last Vort Report said but I think the percentage would have been pretty small.

Yeah Kel, I'm with you mate so don't hold your breath trik, so have you worked out where you'd like to go when you get here as that will decide what clothes you'll need as it might be a little warmer here..but not in the land of apples sorry tassie. You'll have to suss the site and see if you can pick up some of our lingo tassie is the little island that hangs off the bottom of Oz..or the top depending on how you like to look at things Just hope you enjoy while your here mate

Lol. Thanks everybody for the info. I have done quite a bit of research and decided on the gold coast. For little more than the fact that I hate being cold so a nice year round warmth/humidity would be a good change and I've never swam in the ocean. Plus it SEEMS good value over there for housing compared to say Sydney. But who knows, a stay in each major city might be in store...all depends in how much funds I have. One thing I am looking forward to is all the different coin designs y'all have...seems to be endless designs. Plus you guys actually use 50 cent coins without gettingvthem thrown back in your face for being "fake" or never exiting :/ Also that sucks I probably won't find any..I really like the ideA of multiple kinds of banknotes of te same denomination in circulation kinda like hong kong and the uk...keeps things interesting

I think I've seen two since the initial issue went through in 2001 - that's eleven years ago now. Both were heavily circulated. The most recent of those was three years ago.
Gold Coast is a great place to visit. Rent is cheap, but wages are low: you'll find that that is the trade-off everywhere. I think you'd miss a lot by staying in just one area. I enjoy travelling the countryside, usually twice a year, but I'm lucky, in that I also enjoy coming home.

im not too concerned about the wages...i mean your guys' minimum wage is $15.51/hour anyway right? Correct me if I'm wrong. That is a heck of alot better than $10.50 here. Plus me and my girlfriend will have a bunch of mula saved up to fall back on ;)

What ever you decide I'm sure you'll have a good time here. One Canadian I knew on a work visa worked for a free pub poker company. He seemed to enjoy that. If I were you id probably like to try a few different things for the new experiences.

Oh yes for sure. I want to explore as much as possible. I dont want to stay in one small ty town my whole life. Just drives me nuts. Want to learn as much as I can and experience a bunch of things many will not be able to.
