I don't want to be alarming ... but there are many design elements which rings a bell to me on the following coin :

I did not want to rain on his parade as others were admiring the coin but there are a lot of things I did not like on this coin. But I've been wrong before. I usually just sit here at the back of the class hoping I can learn something.

Dentils are wrong, element position on the coin is wrong, design is wrong, details of the writing is wrong (rounded, not sharp), the edge looks wrong ...
But again, I prefer to not say that alone :)

The coin is a counterfeit. It looks nothing like a real Potosi Pillar Dollar. The pillars are not correct proportions, the crowns on all Potosi pillars have distinct second arcs, the denticles look like they were etched into the die by a child with a tool the sharpness of a crayon, the whole "look" of the pillar side is out of scale...I could go on and on. I vote fake.

Hello All,

The Potosi Pillar Dollar from the link is unquestionably fake. It looks like a souvenir than an old historical coin.

I want to show you here a "better" counterfeit of Mexican Pillar Dollar. I bought it a few months ago in HK's yahoo.com auction. At first I don't think it is fake but having learned a lot from this forum, I have to admit this coin is a counterfeit. Specification of the coin: 38.5mm, 26.93 grams.

I think it is a counterfeit for the following reasons:
i) wrong ring test; suggesting that it is not made of silver or a very low silver piece; (better confirmed by S.G.)
ii) the space above the crowns on the reverse side seems to be unproportional large;
iii) the diameter is too small;
iv)overall striking is poor, like a casting than striking
v) the uniform petal edge, no any clue of overlapping found. (leant from another topic dated 11/05/2011, 8 Reales edge question)

Can anybody find more firm clue to suggest it is a counterfeit?
