Will going through a friends collection I noticed his old 2x2 were pretty beat up.
I pulled a 1847 Large Cent out of one and noticed a haze on the coin. I took a Q-tip and gently wiped the coin. The stuff was green in color.Went and looked uo an old postwww.coincommunity.com/forum/...9&whichpage=1 sure enough "plasticized PVC"
Also l saw that his Ike's were in an old Harco and his cents 1941-68 were also in a Harco. Should I clean everything with acetone or is it ok to just to put all in new 2x2s and albums?
These coins have been sitting in a plastic container for the last 10 years. Some cents could be graded as Reds. The Ike's is the full series with all the proofs and silver.
Thanks all and the people in the posted thread.

Take the whold mess to a bank and deposit them. Then let me know which bank so I can get them all.
OR take them all out and rinse with Distilled water, blow dry, put in new 2x2's and then send to me.
Or just place them all in new 2x2's and/or Albums and don't mess with them.

What's a good way to remove PVC without making them look obviously cleaned? Distilled water? Verdi-care?

Acetone. No damage and removes PVC and other adhesives and the like.

bpoc, I would go ahead and acetone them all just to be sure. Better to do that now than possibly have irreversible damage later.

But I suggest dipping them, not rubbing them. Then rinse with distilled water and then blow dry.

NOOOO, DO NOT rinse with water! There is NO need to rinse after acetone. Acetone dries with NO residue. Rinsing with water is counter productive with acetone. What you need to do is a double dip, dip and swish in one container, then do the same in a second separate container and allow to air dry. Done. The only time you rinse a coin with water is after a dip in the acid treatments like EZ Est. Or a soak in water to remove caked on dirt/grime. And then, a dip in acetone AFTER soaking in water helps to ensure all the water is removed from the coin before it can damage or spot the coin.
