Hello,

I happened across this penny and I noticed a couple of odd things. I don't know anything about coin collecting so bare with me :). I've google searched for these blemishes/flaws on this penny but couldn't find any reference to them.

So the first thing I noticed was the mint mark, I did see that it was common to the 1979 Lincoln pennies. The next thing I noticed was that the "R" in "Liberty" looked kind of like an "X", once I took the picture it looked more like an extra line of copper/metal over top the "R". On the back of the coin I noticed the stairs to the Monument look well squished to me, lol I'm not sure of any other way to put it. I can also see a line/crack starting at the top left of the monument. And the last thing that I see is the first part of "States" looks thinner/smaller than the rest of the wording. Well that's what I noticed, did I miss something?

I'm looking forward to finding out what these blemishes are and how they affect this coin?

Thank you so much for your time.

You have a normal circulated cent. The R just took a hit being bounced around with other change.
Here are some links to help with your searching.

papatony is correct. The anomaly with the 'R' of 'LIBERTY' is simply a heavy hit by something else that caused some of the metal in the letter to scoot over. The problem with 'STATES' and the steps on the reverse is caused by the fact that the coin was not fully and completely struck-up. There wasn't enough pressure in the strike to 'fill-in' these details. This is a very common thing with a lot of coins from the days before the current method of making coins (prior to about 1997). The details were higher back then, and it took more pressure to strike the coins. The Mint sets the presses at the minimum strike strength to strike-up the details, but the tolerance here is a fraction of a millimeter. If the machine slips even a little, strike pressure changed, and this occurred.

You are very welcome! There are more sites I am sure you will find in this forum from time to time. I book mark all the ones I see. Keep 5 or 6 tabs open when I am searching. Plus people like Mr Daughtrey, Coop, Mike Diamond, John1, and many others ( just cant remember them all) are very "in the Know" ! Good Luck !!
