I need the opinions of my trusted, fellow CCF friends.

My Husband picked up an old roll of early 60's Roosevelt dimes. They are still in the bank wrapper from Providence, R.I. They are all the silver ones and not clad (supposedly). The end coins are toned but, show no circulation wear whatsoever. Should I open the roll and see what's inside or just put my curiosity aside and let them sit as is? Are there any errors that I need to be aware of or key dates? I didn't notice anything special in "Coin Values" and only higher values on Proofs. What to do...what to do? Ofcourse, my curiosity is killing me! Help!

I would open them but very carefully, with cotton gloves and only with alot of dime flips close by.

dsking.
You use the word "supposedly" so if it were me I would open them up you will never know what is in there if you don't. As for errors just go to coneca web site for more info good luck.

Bruce.

I used the word "supposedly" since the roll has never been opened and I'm just not that trusting. I just glanced through my " Cherry Pickers Guide" and there are a few interesting DDO / DDR's that would be nice finds. I'm still chewing on "what to do". OK, 3 very valued opinions. I'll keep watching and thinking.

I agree with everyone, I would open them up. You really don't know what may be hiding in the roll.

Is it a bank roll, or an original roll from the mint? Bank roll probably has a mix of coins, probably circulated.

It's an original bank roll from the early 60's. It just breaks my heart to open them after 40 years but, my curiousity is getting the best of me!

Thanks Metalman for your offer...and a genuine one at that!

OK, OK...I will take white cotton gloves in hand on a soft cotton towel and then I'll let you all know what little surprises I find - or not! I'll just stare at the roll a little bit more before I do and take a pic first. Can't believe that I'm squeamish over an old roll of dimes! If it were an old roll of Cents I think that I'd beat even Metalman's record!!!!!!!!

Thanks all!

OK! With extreme caution and great trepidation I did it. I very carefully unrolled the rolled ends and was able to keep the paper roll totally intact. With the exception of the two end coins that are deeply toned on the Reverse...ready? Every single coin looks like it came directly from the Mint and was placed into the Bank Roll from Providence! With the naked eye every coin appeared perfect with strong Mint luster. With a 10X Loupe I could see very minor dings and very few scratches on some of the dimes. Oh, and whomever sold them to my Husband as early 60's was off just a hair - ALL COINS ARE 1959 PLAIN!!!

They are all now nicely tucked into 2x2's!!!

That was superbly fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now my Husband is already talking about getting me some more. If I were to sell each coin for $5 - $8 that would bring a nice tidy profit. Oh, but now, I have to keep them atleast for a little while!

Dsking - There is a service over here in Australia that will open your roll and then securely store them indefinitely for you. It is called "Snooba Inc" and although it may look as though their address is identical to mine, that is simply a coincidence.

Wow Deb. I don't know how much your husband paid for the roll but it sounds like you all got a great deal. You probably won't have any trouble making money back off those.

Thanks Snooba for that wonderful offer...I'll keep that in mind for future rolls!

Irish: He paid $60 for the roll. I thought that it was a bit exorbitant but, now I think it was a good deal!
