I was looking for another Coin and found this amongst my collection,i had forgotten about it and was wondering if it was a genuine clipped planchet or something else.It seems the date,1816-1896,has been added by hand. TIA.

Nope, it's just damage. It appears squished, which would not happen on a genuine clip where there is actually less metal than normal. In addition, there is still reeding in the area suspect of a clip. A real clip would not.

To my eyes, it looks like it may have been stood on it's edge and lightly hammered multiple times to get that 'squashed' date look. My opinion is that if it was a straight clip of that length, the dates would not be there at all, so I reckon it was a 'shed job'.

It's certainly had a pretty rough life, but wait and see what others think.

Some Parkes coins are known to be upset, so check it carefully, it may still be an error.

Thanks for all the replies,i don't think its been "squished as there is no damage to the opposite side of the rim,the dates seem iffy but the reeding on the clip(?) seems to match the rest of the coin. Also the "S" of Parkes seems to follow the clip down.

There shouldn't be any reeding where the clip would be.

Yeah, the section of coin missing is at an angle, the reeding is mainly on the bottom(Obverse)rim section and seems to match where it should be on a normal coin as the Obverse side of the rim is nearly complete.I've never worried much about error coins so my knowledge is not that great.

To put it on ebay and pretend it is an error, or anything is not smart.
That's a fast track way to be put on the dodgy seller list and blocked from the forum.
Although ebay is tempting to make a quick buck, think about how other people are going to see it.
I mean I have 1930 penny copies and junk I could put on and make a dollar, but then I wouldn't have my self respect.

The reason the "S" "follows the clip" is that it is not a clip. The flat section has been bashed into the coin, which is why the text is compressed and smaller than it should be.

What makes you think it might be an error?
Compare it to other errors and find the similarities and differences.
Think about the minting process and how it might have been made (both in the mint and PMD).

I'm not sure but I don't see how you can create that damage without affecting the bottom of the coin or the other side,a huge amount of pressure would be needed.
I'll show it to some dealers when I'm in Sydney after the Olympics and see what their opinion is,they may have seen something like it be it PMD or genuine mint flaw.
