When on vacation, do you find yourself going through the phone book looking for any local coin shops? OR Before you go on vacation, check to see if there will be a coin show in the area? My wife thinks that it just amazing that I can sniff them out while on vacation!

My biggest problem is that I am often travelling on the weekend and I have found that most coin shops are not open then.

I have "coin store" "coin shop" "flea market" "silver gold" programmed into my Garmin. So whenever we go on a trip I bring them up to see if anything is near us.

A couple of years back I was in Venice and happened to walk buy a coin shop. Went in there and most of the coins were super expensive, and I had no idea what most of them were. Ended up buying a 2002 Italian Euro set. Also bought a 50 Euro cent coin from the Vatican that has the Pope on it.
Other than that, when travelling abroad I try and get a set of the local currency. I've got a fair amount of coins from the UK, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and others.
Besides that Venice coin shop, I've never been to a coin shop outside my city. As the coin collecting fever grows, that will probably change!

Phone books are things of the past, internet is the it now. Google (Google Map) coin shops/dealers in the town and it'll give you a more than a comprehensive list of everything they have. I'm doing it right now while visiting my sister.

I usually check all the coin related places before hand: coin stores, museums and national banks for unc coins at face value. Haha still remember "the numismatist's jackpot" in Kenya when local shop keeper handed me fistfull of odds and ends coins as change. I'm sure she tried to get rid of them and waited just a tourist to come in.

Always looking, my wife and I have a hard time driving past an antique store as it is and my first question is always "got any coins". Just so happens there is a coin show in Clayton NY. this weekend I'll be vacationing near (yeah I'll be there) I always look for shows and shops in new places I visit.

isn't coin hunting the only reason to go on a holiday what else do you do anyway.

Quote: When on vacation, do you find yourself going through the phone book looking for any local coin shops? Yes. Quote: Before you go on vacation, check to see if there will be a coin show in the area? No. Here in Australia there aren't many coin shows, so the probability of encountering one without specifically arranging the trip to target them is very, very low. I've never been to a coin show outside of my home city. Besides, the occasional coin dealer visit is wallet-thinning enough. I've never attended a coin show and come home still with spare cash to spend. I'm not sure I'd have enough discipline to attend a coin show while on holidays and not spend all the money I'd need to pay for motel bills, petrol for the trip home, etc.

I even go on Craigslist for the area I will be in to see if I can grab anything on the fly.

My local dealer has all the large cents cataloged. I like the shops where you can look through boxes of flips. I came back from vacation with 28 large cents and a 1914-D wheat. The 14D wasn't in a flip; it was slabbed.

I don't go to coin stores on vacation, but I do order a few boxes of coins from a local bank to dig through when I have time and return them to a different bank before I go. You never know what you'll find.

That's funny Silver eagle. I've never been so proactive. I'll consider it when I'm up in Canada later this year :)
