Hey everyone. I got this for a pretty decent price and I'm trying to grade it but I feel like I'm being too generous. I'm hoping to get some feedback from you all. My main concern is that this was perhaps cleaned and I just can't seem to see it for myself because I feel like the condition is far greater than what I paid for. I don't have any reason to believe it has been cleaned as I have purchashed from this place before and have always been pleased with their products and they are usually very good at indicating if a coin has been cleaned. I hope these photos are okay.

I would give it a high AU, and I don't see indications of a past cleaning.

I see some friction in the brighter photos. Not sure that it is from cleaning or just from sliding around in a drawer. Nice AU-55 or possibly an AU-58.

I appreciate the feedback. I was looking at poor photos of some NGC MS65 coins and was feeling like mine had sharper details and was getting super excited at the prospect of possibly having a $200+ coin. But I wasn't positive what to focus on for wear so I kept leaning higher. Which is funny since I usually under grade my coins because I'm so critical lol.
I paid $50 so I still feel like I got a great deal.

I'm assuming this wouldn't be worth sending in for grading unless I needed to fill a voucher spot or something?

From a money standpoint itll cost you 30is to have it graded so youd need it to hit a ms63+ to make money. It would be easier to sell though if you did. That said its worth it to send it in if thats how you want it or like your collection. But no I wouldnt if you were only doing it hoping to make money

Well my father has been considering moving into AGEs and I think he may be interested in having some of them graded if he can acquire them at a good price. And so I may be able to get it in on his ticket lol.
I'm not looking to sell it myself as this is actually one of the first coins I ever researched and wanted that kind of got me into collecting and this was the first opportunity I've had to purchase a nice looking one at a reasonable price. However, I would love the opportunity to add value to the coin in case my future generations do not like it as much as me.

Why not buy the AGE's already slabbed. Most of the time it is cheaper to buy a slabbed MS-69 than buy the ASE and pay the slabbing fees. MS-70's are tough to get cherry picking rolls unless you send in a monster box for grading like the guys on cable TV do.

Itd be cheaper for you if you can get in on his order for sure lol. But itd definitely be easier to resell in the future graded. I like the slabbed coins a lot myself aside from the value part I like hoe they protect the coin yet still allow me to handle it all I want

AGE, I'll let my dad know that. I don't know if he has decided yet if he wants to just buy the bullion or the proofs yet. Does that make a difference in what he should do? I know he wants to stack gold more as an investment than a collection and I'm trying to convince him that in the long run that more numismatic value may be better than just bullion value. I'm going to have to check the precious metals section of the forum and see what they think.
I'm with you basebal if he will pay for the grading I'll definitely do it. I do like the look and feel as well as the protection from slabs but I have yet to take any difinitive stance on how I want to store my collection. I have slabs, flips, airtites, saflips, tubes, rolls, albums, and even plastic sandwich bags for my heavily circulated world coins that I only keep because I have nothing else to do with them lol.

I agree with AGE if you dad wants all slabbed coins after he sends in that batch tell him to just buy them slabbed. The only time you save money is if you hit a 70, but you lose money on all the others unless youre sending them in more than 100 at a time.
Whether he wants 70s or 69s or doesn't care its cheaper to buy them already slabbed and let someone else do the leg work on it.
I really like the slabs too. I learned my lesson sending some in and just buy them slabbed now.

I took this to a show today to get some more opinions. All of the dealers I spoke with put it at either MS62 or 63. Having it in hand really does make a difference I guess. If pops ever decides to send in some coins for grading I'll try to slip this in with them lol. Otherwise I'm happy with it raw.

Not sure how I missed this the first time ... perhaps too much work and not enough time. I see original mint luster and no evidence of circulation wear at the high points ... believe the photographic 'hot spots' on the eagle breast (reverse) and General arms (obverse) make it difficult to grade this coin from the submitted photos. Tend to agree with an MS63 or so assessment ... makes this a $70 or so coin and IMHO not worth the price to slab through a top-notch TPG. David

Thanks for the assessment nickel. Like I said unless my dad wants to blow his money on getting it slabbed I'm just going to keep it raw.
Still one of, if not the, my favorite coins.
