My daughter left last weekend for a week as a camp counselor, so I took the opportunity to go through her change jar. I found 2 steelies and one coin from Malawi in there.

The best way to put it is, they are not rare by any means. Millions were minted in 1943 and you can still pick up an example in MS for a little bit of money. Even though millions are still out there, these are rare to find in circulation. To date, I have only come across 1 and it looked like it may have been circulating since 1943.

I found a very grimy one in my change about six months back. I had never seen one in circulation before then.

I had heard years ago that the government was dumping them in the ocean to get them out of circulation. Don't know if it is true or not.

Not likely. But would give anyone with a powerful magnet something to go fishing for.
At a coin show not to long ago, a dealer had bags of pennies on his table for sale. Supposed to be 300 for $5. I bought one for the fun of it and found several 1943, rather beat up cents mixed in.

Walter Breen says the same thing in his Complete Encyclopedia. He claims "millions" were dumped, probably killing many fish with zinc poisoning.

That made me laugh. I actually left them on her dresser to show them to her when she returned. I'm still trying to get at least one of my kids interested in coins.

Well best of luck to you with that. My fiance is kind enough to put up with me collecting but I don't think she'll let me get the kids into it when we have some. At least not unless they ask me first lol.
