Hi, I live in Ottawa Canada and I just found a 1943 steel penny in a Canadian penny roll. Since I do not live in the United States I have no idea how uncommon these things are in US circulation or in US penny rolls. (more common than in Canada I would think!) Has anyone (or anyone you know) found one in a roll or in change recently? I know they were hated by many when they came out and a bunch of them got melted in the 1960s.

They're rare in circulation because we don't have any magnetic coins so they get caught in the "foreign" coin traps in coin counters and such. The only time I ever got one in change was in ... Windsor, Ontario!

They're not a rare coin collecting-wise though; they had large mintages and were widely saved because of the novelty.

I've only seen 2 or 3 ever in circulation. But captain is right they aren't super rare in collections. I have a full mint mark set in a lens (pretty sure they were replated but I wanted them to admire their beauty and novelty as well as the history behind them more so than for their value).

I also have a replated 43S to look like a copper just for fun lol. I feel like they made a lot of novelty versions of these.

I've never found one in a box/roll, probably for reasons mentioned above. Only one I found in the wild was actually in my girlfriend's change.

Haven't seen one in circulation for a long time. Haven't even heard of people finding them in change. So many have been replated with almost anything possible for sales and fun. I've got almost a roll now of the Chromed ones. Only 3 of the Copper plated ones. Many of the Zinc and Tinned ones. As to them being melted, I've never heard of that since they are mostly Steel and don't melt easily.

I've found a few of them in rolls over the years (five in one box once a few years back). Got one in a roll about a month ago. They had a huge mintage, so they are not valuable in circulated condition.

I read online somewhere that the mint took a bunch of them back in the 1960s and melted them. I know they had a huge mintage and aren't valuable, but I never expected in a million years to find one in a Canadian roll. I think they don't stay in circulation long due to their distinctive colour.

In the last five years, and 10's of thousands of cents, I've come up with 6 or so. As a kid back in the '60's I used to buy them for a dollar a roll from a teller; a days works for a kid back then.

I had heard years ago that the government was dumping them in the ocean to get them out of circulation. Don't know if it is true or not.

I've been given steelies in place of dimes before. They're not totally rare, but they don't come up often.
