I was recently in Lake Winnepesaukee NH looking for coins in small antique shops and came across this. It has slots for $1, .50,.25,.10,.05,.02 and .01. It has no identifying marks and is held together with

Trying-To-Identify-Box small brass(?) tacks. The coin denominations are at the bottom and there are counting lines as you go up. Almost looks like a casino tray but it is not. Anyone have any ideas what it is or from when? It has the Two Cent spot so that should help. Tks in advance.

Looks like a counting tray. Not an expert on these things but just an observation. I think it is nice especially since it has area for 2 cent. Did you buy it? What did you pay for it (I am nosey lol)

Yes I bought it, it is much nicer than the pics show. I paid $90 for it just because I have never seen one and of course the .02 cent slot. I want to fill it with period coins if I can just figure out when it was made or who made it. I may have to just pick the time period for the .02 cent and use those dates.

Sounds like a cash drawer that pre dates cash registers. Pretty neat. Is the one cent slot for large or small cents?

Hi and welcome

I would agree that it looks like a counting tray of some type.

I'm gonna guess you got it in Meredith or Wolfeboro. I paint houses around Winnepesaukee.

Yes picked it up in Meredith. The slot is for small cents, indian heads originally because the Two Cents were made from 1864-73 and the large were stopped in 1857 I think. I am just going to try and fill it with coins between 64-73 and put it in the safe deposit box I think. Thanks for the help.

Sorry for asking about something I have almost no knowledge on but:
1) do you have any ideas as to why there isn't a 3-cent slot;
and 2) it's probably hard to tell, but is the 5-cent slot nickels or Half Dimes?

Are there any stamp mark on the bottom? On the hinges?

There are no hallmarks anywhere on the box, nor are there any hinges. I don't know why there isn't a Three Cent slot, maybe they were being phased out at this time. As far as the nickel, it is def the 5 cent (20.5mm) and not the Half Dime (18.75mm). Tks for the replies.
