Picked up two of these at an auction for $25.50 each. I Don't really get into colorized coins but could not turn down ASE at that price.

Yep. I've done the same thing. Most of them are beyond tasteless, IMO, and I generally don't mind colored coins. But, like yours, I've been able to find them for well under spot and figured, regardless of packaging, it's still an ASE underneath all that ugly.

Hey. A colorized but otherwise undamaged ASE for $2.00 under spot? Yeah, I'd consider taking that deal. Has anyone ever successfully stripped and restored a colorized coin?

Foolsgold, Here's an example of one of the more heinous ones in my collection. As you can see, the cheap paint or decal or whatever the coloring is started pealing off when I took it out of its original case and put it in an Airtite. Ronnie would have been mortified to see what someone did to his likeness. Yours is a masterpiece of form and function compared to mine. Cw, You read my mind. My Reagan ASE is flaking badly and I always wondered how hard it would be to expedite the process.

I've done the same thing, picked up a few below spot. I would also be very interested to know if these could be 'fixed'. I wonder if acetone would do the trick?

Does anyone remember the commercials they used to play seemingly nonstop around the turn of the century for these "beauties"?

I bought one of these a while back. Dipped it in acetone for a minute or so, and then the decal rubbed right off. It looks brand new; not a scratch on it!

I know there are different methods for colorizing coins but I just now found this article discussing one type of colorization process: "The process is interesting. The artist uses tiny paintbrushes to first outline the image on a coin. Then the coin is fired at high temperatures (and subsequently after every coat of paint is applied). Each paint color is mixed by hand as the artist paints, so no two coins are ever alike. After the image is completely and carefully painted, the artist applies a coat of protective plastic and bakes the coin to ensure the painting lasts for years. The entire painting process can take up to two days to complete! Imagine painting a coin for two days!" - PCHtips web site. This method sounds fairly durable which is bad news for cleaning and restoration purposes.

That is VERY encouraging news, CPC24. I'll have to see if I can find a deeply discounted deal on a "decal" colorized coin and try that myself.

I've bought several before and just soaked them in acetone. The paint comes right off. Some of them I had the coax off with a q-tip. The problematic spot is in between the elbow and plants Liberty is carrying. It is small and the paint likes to stay there.

I got one last year as a novelty. The design is like the first one traevin posted.

I understand acquiring bullion at a great price it's like hitting the jackpot at a Las Vegas casino. Especially with the high premiums that precious metals are fetching. But in my opinion, colorizing a American Silver Eagle is like spray painting graffiti on the Mona Lisa. It's like when Pete Townsend smashes a guitar at the end of a Who concert, there's something wrong with smashing a perfectly good guitar. Same idea but with guitars. Thank you John Hiatt for that one. Lets ban colorizing of bullion, but let's keep buying them at rock bottom prices! Who's with me!
