What would you guys pay for a 1861 silver 3 cent? The current owner grades it at XF... It is NOT graded by NGC or any 3rd party grading service just what the owner "grades" it at. According to the NGC price guide in XF condition it is worth $102.00, but from other price guides (not "properly" graded price guides) such as mycoincollecting.com etc, which I believe are for coins not "properly" graded, an I correct? The only Red Book I have is from '74.... Ya, I need a newer one... But anyways I thought $50-$60 would be about right? Edited by NathanASE 07/29/2012 9:28 pm

If you have a copy of tha ANA Grding Standards or Photograde then compare the coin to the grades for that issue and see if it is properly graded or not. Most people seem to forget that the third party grading services have not been around forever and there was a time when dealers and collectors actually had to learn how to grade coins instead of having someone else do it for them. TPGs do not always properly grade coins. In fact many collectors let TPGs grade their coins and then are disapointed when those grades are not accepted by a buyer. Learn to grade yourself.
EF 45: Obv.: Slight wear on the outer edge of the shield. High points of the star points and ridges are worn but show details. Rev.: Entire central design is lightly worn but shows all details
Other grading guides may be slightly different in what the focal points are but for an EF in general, all details may be worn but visible.
If it is truly an EF bump up your price a bunch. Take a look at the prices for that coin by doing a search.

No, unfortunately I do not have an ASA grading guide, I'm new to collecting and started because I was left a decent collection from my late father, the only book that came with the coins was a '74, 27th edition Red Book... A little outdated. I agree that they do not always grade properly.. Unless I find a good deal on an already graded coin I do not send them in to be graded. So assuming it IS in EF condition then what should I bump my price up to? $80, $100? He was asking $102, well said $102 is "fair market value" but would go down a bit? I can rough grade coins, but I'm sure I'd be off by a bit. Also I cannot tell if coins have been cleaned, If it's fake (lots of fakes of this coin were apparently made in the south as well as Europe during the civil war), and I would have no idea at all. I can guestimate grades and probably come close, especially with pictures but even comparing the coin to pictures would still be risky for me being that the value jumps so much between grades, I'd really be taking his word for it. So I guess what I'm asking is going on his word that it is EF is $102 (hopefully a bit less) a good price? And if it graded lower (after I bought it) what kind of loss am I looking at to the next grade down?

So he just responded to my offer of $45-$60 and said he would take $50! He said he would grade the detail's as EF/XF but it is a "little dark, but not too dark"... Good deal?

Can't say if it's a good deal until we see some pictures. $50 would be the approximate value of a problem free Fine. Hopefully it's not too dark as it could be environmental damage.

Ok, thank you everyone! I'm meeting him tomorrow or the next day depending on his scedule to check it out/ buy it. So if it does happen to be XF $50 is a great deal and if only a F then $50 sounds good still? Again, I'm new here but thanks everyone! You've all been super helpfull!

Make sure it isn't bent or have any tiny holes drilled into it, otherwise it should be a solid deal. I have seen a lot of problem 3cs in the past so be cautious, they are just so small that they are easily damaged.

We wasnt lying! It is in immaculate condition! A little dark but not damage, all details very sharp, no bend at all. Compared it to counterfeit pics on this site and others and I've gotta say if its a fake they did an unbelievable job, all lines sharp and straight, small stars match and are sharp... All the details Kopper Ken said are perfect.. Unbelievable dietail. I think The guy graded it right at EF, maybe higher... I use my iPhone for Internet from my house and for some reason I can't upload photos from it, so I'll try to get some on my laptop and upload them tomorrow, I'm dying to see what grade you guys think it is. I'm happy with the $50 I paid, very happy. Also got a 1938 D buffalo from him that he graded at AU-58 with a beautiful rainbow hue, for $5... Also could be a higher grade, will post pics of this also tomorrow! Thanks again everyone!

there was a time when collectors had to learn to grade for themselves.... a skil that is largely unknown today.

Quote: there was a time when collectors had to learn to grade for themselves Which didnt change anything, its all subjective. People still argued all day long over a grade or two in price. People do it now with slabbed coins and most certainly do it with raw. Even if they do agree with the grade theres people that will do it to try and get a better deal as well

You all make very good points... I'm getting better at grading but I'm definitly no expert and could probably be ripped off if the person was a "sweet talker". It just gets kinda nerve racking when the coin I'm buying has such a price jump between grades. Now that I know about photograde it has already helped quite a bit. Here's the pics... Not the best quality but pretty good. I definitely agree with the EF grade... Possibly even an AU? The last pic is enhanced.. And the words look blury because of the angle of the photos, that's why I took 2 of that side from different angles.

O ya, and another thing, being that my Red Book is from '74 what would be the best online price guide to use? Because NGC's site grades this coin in EF at $102.. While others a lot less... What would the value be for this coin? And also would it be worth sending into be graded? Now that my collections getting pretty large (for me at least, lol) I have a few coins I was thinking about having graded... But I'm not sure if it's worth it?
