Okay, so, you know that antique creamer I talk about sometimes, that I was filling with 2009 pennies? I'm pretty close to having my "super-nice" tubes filled, so those pennies now have a new home in a CoinStar machine (or, well, they will tomorrow).

Instead I have filled the creamer with 1998, 1999, 2000 pennies, to be searched for WAM varieties. For the record, we're talking probably about 300 pennies, minimum. My odds seem relatively good (and yes, I know, I could search THOUSANDS and not find a WAM, but 300+ > 3 or 30).

The biggest question is: HOW DO I SPOT ONE? I've seen some folks say it's any coin where the A and M don't touch, some that there has to be a significant separation in the AM. My loupe is a 5x I repurposed from the philately section of Hobby Lobby--do I need something bigger? Will this suffice? Should WAMs be visible with the naked eye?

I can usually spot them with the naked eye. But some of the dull or grimey coins will probably need magnification and 5x will probably work just fine.
Rest in Peace

Check the variety section of this forum for one of the frequent posts about WAMs and you will see lots of pictures of them.

Look at the spacing of the A & M on a 1991 cent and use it for reference.

I look at the FG. I'm lazy.
Don't have to move my eye/loupe up one notch when I turn over the coin.
I mean when I have my helper turn over the coin.

Those are the only business strike dates that have been verified..other than when a WAM was normal (before 1993)

The WAM's started on the 1959-1992 cents. So if you have one of these you have a WAM to compare to the 1998-2000 cents to see if it is one desired WAM's?

They are normal on those proof sets. There you need to find CAMs.
