A couple of weeks ago I was the winning bidder for this Gallienus zoo coin at $4.25. The coin arrived today.

The seller identified it as a Hippocamp; however, I think this is a Criocamp based solely on the few letters remaining on the reverse legend. "MER" is what I can make out which matches the first three letters of the legend "MERCVRIO CONS AVG" on RIC 242. The problem for me is that the image looks little like the forepart of a ram (criocamp) and even less the forepart of a horse (hippocamp). I'm hoping for a criocamp as I already own a hippocamp. What are your thoughts?

I agree Martin, but looking at both wildwinds and Helvetica's (both Dane's I know), the legend "MERCVRIO CONS AVG" is attributed only to the criocamp. But you are correct. It certainly does not look like a ram's head.

That's a nice coin for the price. Unfortunately, I know very little about the Zoo series as I haven't gotten around to collecting them yet.

Here is a page you might want to look at, if you haven't seen it already.

I agree with Martin.

I think the first three letters on the reverse are NEP[TVNO] and N in exergue. Criocamps have an H in ex.

Well, dog gone it, I think you are all right. I just looked at the reverse legend and the third letter is P not R. Making it NEPTVNO CONS AVG. Oh well, one can hope, right? Still lookin' for that Criocamp.

I like the zoo series because I can imagine romans looking about for that last one, just as modern coin collectors try to collect series.

Hey, if I win the lottery, maybe ill try it!
