In July of 2011, I posted these two JC Denarii questioning their authenticity. At the time, I never received a definitive answer. Both bobbyhelmet and SAP responded to my original thread with bobbyhelmet inclined towards the two as fake and SAP inclined the two looked original. https://goccf.com/t/93781

Well, I want to resurrect this topic once again as we now have new and more participants on the CCF Ancients discussion board. So, once again I am asking for everyone's opinion on the authenticity of these two coins in my collection. The first coin is worn thin and only weighs 3.22 grams, while the second coin has sharper images and weighs 3.25 grams. Both are 18mm across and both have tested very positive for silver content (90-100% silver). There are no edge seams. So, what is the consensus? Real or Fake?

My noobish opinion is real. The scratches match a real battered coin - they couldve been put there with emery clothe though.

the second one is a bit odd with the tarnish, but id still say real.

If they arent, someone has spent a lot of effort making them look beaten up.

i don't know jw, but at least it's silver...if it's a fake it is a pretty nice one, more of a "replica" or than a fake.

I am by no means an expert but here is my opinion.

First coin looks like a slightly misused denarius, and it looks real to me.

Second coin; your guess is as good as mine. The edges are chowdered.

In my opinion there is no doubt in my mind that both coins are replicas. Even then the replicas appear to have been further artificially "aged" . I suggest if you don't agree with die match I found that you take it to an expert. Look for the offset letter under the bull hind legs.

Obviously I have had my doubts about both these coins or I wouldn't have posted them yet again. There are no experts in my area to take the coin, but I can send to either David Sear or to HJB coins. In the meantime, I welcome your opinions, both positive and negative. That's what is good about this discussion board. None of us want anything other than the truth of your opinions.

Ancientnoob: I was unable to find the die match to which you referred. The link takes me to a page on forum's fake report, but not to a particular coin. Oh, and last year I voluntarily listed my coin on that report since I was so unsure. Still am.
