I have collected and sold error coins in years past and have never come across a coin that was a in collar Double Struck Coin and only double struck on one side... I found this ebay listing of a ANACS Certified 1898 Morgan dollar that was Double Struck on the Obverse side ONLY and since my vision is not good enough to see a second strike in the posted photo, was curious if this was some type of VAM instead...
I thought I would post the link here in the VAM section and see what others think...

I can't imagine what the seller lists in his description on how this type of error can happen, he believes that two planchets entered the coin dies at the same time and struck, then the top coin remained in the coining chamber as the bottom coin ejected, then struck again... If the Morgan dollar Obverse is the hammer die I just don't see this happening, however, if the Reverse Die is the hammer die than maybe it is possible...

I remember reading about these errors just recently. A coin could be struck once, fail to eject, and stay aligned on the anvil die without any rotation. The hammer die could then rotate between strikes and strike the coin again, leaving doubling on the obverse only. In another scenerio, the original reverse details are just destroyed with the second strike while some obverse details may remain. Either way it is extremely rare. With the pictures that the seller provides it is impossible to tell and I would question the anacs analysis.
As always I would wait for mike to give you the best answer.

My first thought when reading this thread was, "Well, if John Roberts thinks it's double-struck, then it's double-struck." John is, and was at the time of this slab, ANACS' Morgan guy and if there's a more knowledgeable VAMmer and Morgan disciple, I haven't met him. ErrorCoins22's idea makes eminent sense. As far as I know, the obverse was always the hammer die.

ErrorCoins222's answer makes sense only if 1 planchet is involved, the seller had mentioned that he believed that 2 planchets had entered the dies at the same time and only the anvil die struck coin had ejectet...

SsuperDdave, I have used ANACS for years (and still do) but did have a problem with them on one of the error coins I had purchased from Fred Weinberg a number of years ago... The Coin was a 1999 Large Broadstruck Dime with Edge reeding that Fred advertised as being Double Struck, the 1st strike was a normal strike, failed to eject then struck a 2nd time without the collar, thus a large broadstrike... When I submitted this coin to ANACS as a Double Struck, Broad Struck Dime, I received it back as a normal Broadstruck Strike and not Double Strike... When I telephoned ANACS and requested why it wasn't certified as a Double Strike, they replied that their error coin grader believed that it was some sort of edge damage and not double struck, I asked why then was the coin NOT in a "problem holder w/details grade", and they mentioned that I have the option of sending the coin back so it can be placed in another holder... I should note that it had cost more for the ANACS certification fees then I had originally paid for the coin... I had contacted Fred and advised him on my ANACS experience and that I also believed that it was a Double Strike and with his (Fred's) experience in the error coin field believed ANACS messed up on this one...

When I previewed my reply I noticed that the bad word filter had kicked in and changed ******* to messed (this is funny) and am curious if this site has a list of what their filter considers are bad words...

I have a problem with a coin Fred looked at for PCGS. It's a partial collar. I posted it a while back I think, here or V W. Any way the coin is not round and the tilted collar is a 2 sided tilt but both tilts are the same way. I am thinking of breaking it out, just because I think they have the attribution wrong. I can see a double strike on my coin without a problem.

I am trying to find the words to write that show the way the coin sits, but cant. The grade on this one is an AU-58 but with this coin that is no biggie, its the Error that matter's.

I just looked at this coin and enlarged the photos and I cant see it.
