Hey All
I want to collect at least one coin from every country which is a daunting task in itself. However, I am mainly focusing on German city states and any other forms of territorial coinage that were minted. I have compiled a list of every state that I know of. Some I already have coins for but I am looking to find at least one from each.
Anhalt-Bernburg Baden Bavaria Birkenfield Brandenburg Bremen East Friesland Frankfurt German Empire Germany, Dem Rep of Germany, Fed Rep of Hamburg Hannover Hesse-Cassel Hesse-Darmstadt Hesse-Homburg Liegnitz-Brieg Mansfeld Mecklenburg-Schwerin Mecklenburg-Strelitz Nassau Oldenburg Prussia Rhineland Saarland Saxe-Meiningen Saxony Schleswig Holstein Schwarzburg-Sondershausen Shaumberg-Lippe Third Reich Weimar Republic Wurttemberg
Is my list complete? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I really should get me a Kraus book or 2. I just won a coin on an e-bay auction for the German state of Herzogthum-Nassau. So I suppose I could add that to the list as well.

"Herzogthum" is the German word for "Duchy", not part of the name itself, so your coin is likely to be a plain old "Nassau". In pre-Napoleonic times, the various branches of the family (such as Nassau-Weilburg, Nassau-Dietz and Nassau-Usingen) sometimes issued their own coinages. German States are a popular collecting field, both in Germany and internationally. The Krause books are an excellent guide to coinage of the German states, especially the 19th century edition. The catalogues covering the 1600-1800 period still have a few holes; for some of the smaller states, only the large thalers are listed. There is a book in the "Krause family" covering just German States coins: the Standard Catalog of German Coins. If all you're interested in is German States, this book is a better choice than the "regular Krauses" because it's all in one volume. As for a list of German States, well, it's difficult to form a comprehensive list without fixing a particular time period. The "German States" changed frequently over the centuries, with various noble houses merging, splitting, becoming extinct or invading each other, with resultant changes to the list. "Germany" used to be much larger than it is today; many states listed as "Polish" in the catalogues were ethnically and linguistically German, at least as far as the ruling class was concerned. Danzig is a good example from the 20th century. Finally, don't forget the German colonies from the pre-WWI period - a coin from each is a "must-have" for the German enthusiast. There aren't many, but some of them can be hard to find: - German East Africa (now Rwanda, Burundi and the mainland part of Tanzania) has the most extensive coin series. - German New Guinea (northern half of Papua New Guinea) issued the full range of denominations but in much lower numbers. - Kiau Chou (Chinese enclave, now Tsingtao (Qingdao), China) only issued 5˘ and 10˘ coins. Other German colonies, like Kamerun, Togoland, German Southwest Africa, Nauru, German Samoa and the Caroline Islands didn't issue their own coins (though some made banknotes).

Hi Grace. Here is a partial list of German States in the late 1700s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...pants_(1792)The German tradition of dividing estates to include all heirs created an ever changing list of Baronies, Duchys, Margraves etc. I have about 110 of them, and I'm just scratching the surface. I belong to a group of folks who are trying to collect 1 coin from every country that issued them, after 1600. Many of the members are extremely knowledgeable on almost ever area of coin history. They have a list that of all known coin issuing entities since 1600 that has several thousand listings. If you are interested I can post the link to it. If you would like just a copy of their list that includes just the German States I would be glad to send it to you in an Email attachment, it is to long to post here. JonySky

I'm also looking for one coin from every known country but spending more time focusing on German coins when I can. I am greatly interested in both lists that you have and if I could get them that'd be awesome. if it's easier you could e-mail them to me if CC.com will allow. Thanks!

The warning is a good ideal. I have created addresses just for groups and such, and have had them spammed to death after posting on a board. Grace I don't know if you receive mail at the hotmail address, but I sent a email to it, if you don't, leave a message here and I'll figure another way to get the info to you. For any members here that are concerned that I might be an unknown danger, you can check this handle with other boards and see I've been around awhile. JonySky

I've "reported" the post, just to get the moderator's attention here.
If that doesn't work, send an e-mail to Forum Mom Susanlynn9 asking for help; her e-mail address should be included in the confirmation e-mail sent to you when you signed up for the forum.
