Now it's $1475 and still going. Dang. I will keep my eye out at future coin shows / dealers. I didn't realize this particular bar was that rare!

You know me to well Harrison, as I went to ebay and Craigslist immediately and did a search for old pour 4 oz. Engelhard's FINDING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, but at least I had a little day dream, LOL....

I think the serial number had something to do with it too hawk. Maybe look for bars with radars

$2650 is insane! I would rather have 1 oz of gold and stack the left over $1k on silver.

radars on bars have nothing to do with the price this bar was rare that is all, a uncommon size by a well known refinery Surprised it went for $2650 but there are some serious collectors out there.

You are right Swrbxxx as auctions like this always makes me think there are HARD core collectors out there who have been doing this for a long time and understand the value of such rare items....
Really is it that odd?
Think about a 1 oz. gold coin. You could have a 1933 in average shape worth just a bit over spot, where as you could have another dead mint high relief one in access of 25k....
We all have seen it with everything from rare penny's to gold to silver like this. The metal content is totally IRRELEVANT, and its value is based on rarity period, and of course that most trusted Engelhard name....

I think the example I was thinking of was a 1907, my mistake. You are right even one of those in rough shape would be worth a fortune....
I had seen a high relief 1907 double eagle seems like on the top of the CCF page running auctions about six months back or so, and it was setting at 25k at one point....
