I wrote to this seller, advising him that his listing appeared to be a copy from the 1960's or so. I advised him to confirm my observation with some local dealer before closing the sale. As the seller has excellent feedback, I presume that he may ... Let's see how high the bids go!

The statement "It was purchased with a bunch of items in an estate sale." seems to occur frequently on fake Roman or fake ancient Greek coins.

Why the sellers of fake items think that makes a difference, I don't know however perhaps they feel they can claim that they didn't look at it carefully, if the fake is 'discovered'.

Also, "Returns: Not accepted" can sometimes be reasonable, but not from a trader, in my opinion.

That's a good point, Pertinax. The implication is then that their volume purchases give them leave to rationalize "errors" or the incidence of fakes in their listings.

It does disturb me though that so many of these so-called estate sellers outright label their wares in such a manner as to impart genuineness; this, when they have no clue! The simple use of a question mark in the listing would send a reasonable message to prospective buyers that an item has not been authenticated.

Looks like many people are suspicious of this one as bidding is light. I for one would not buy this coin.

"Estate sale" is code for "I want you to believe this might be real--although I won't stand behind its authenticity". Common verbiage for ebay's junk peddlers.

Too bad, the term "estate sale" and "unsearched" have been widely abused in these auctions that it actually takes away a lot of steam from those that are truly as such.

The first five bids were made by two people w/ a total of 17 E-Bay transactions between them. The last two highest bidders have 263 & 251 respectively. Both the last two bidders have purchased quite a few "Colonial" coins. Maybe they know something?

How can you tell, bidders identities are supposed to be hidden from all but the seller?

It is my opinion that this specimen is indeed a legitimate example. I am familiar with the copies emitted during the 1960s.

I don't have my reference here to diagnose but when I get back to the office I can verify its particular Ryder variety.

see my revised posting below.

Not the best picture to work from on ebay as its too grainy an image. Sure don't like the look of it but can't say one way or the other as to it being authentic.

Looked at the bid history then clicked on the buyers... didn't reveal their identity, but does show what types of coins they have bid on...

I am revising my opinion.

The specimen appears to be a copy of a Ryder 1-D. I say appears to be a copy, because I believe it is quite possibly a replica. And upon better viewing on a regular sized monitor, I also believe that it does indeed resemble some of those 1960s replicas; The lettering doesn't look quite right.

(friendly piece of advice folks -- try to avoid using a Nexus 7" tablet, while out at 1am, to view grainy ebay photos! LOL.)

Hey guys, look at the serifs in the legends; particularly, the curly feet of those A's in Massachusetts. I just found and got to looking at a few 60's era copies that I remembered having. One of my two Mass. copies has serifs just like the subject one, and it's also a 1788.
