I'm glad I took a relook at that this morning and posted an update.
I wouldn't have touched that thing with a 10 foot pole.

In my personal opinion, this coin appears to be in too good to be true condition for a coin dating that old. Wonder what the winning bidder of $308 will do if it's a fake?

Here's another "1788" replica that's currently drawing strong bids: http://www.ebay.com/itm/30075547369...t_500wt_1089Note how aged the item appears, as if it's been buried. The word CENTS has been obliterated. My suspicion is that the word COPY may have been there in the shield, and a previous owner probably scratched that out. This copy/replica with the crude lettering isn't as deceptive as this thread's subject piece.

Yuck. Did you see the other stuff the guy is trying to pawn off?

Yes, Cheetah, I did peruse his wares ... There's an "1824" dated "Hard Times" token - another replica from the 1960's. These were so plentiful in the market that Rulau took occasion to list them in his work. While hiss wares have zero appeal to me, I do appreciate his 14 day return and low starting bids. IMHO, most of his offerings aren't worth the time and effort to peddle on ebay - better suited to a flea market. Yet, perhaps the seller is an old, retired guy like me, who's just looking to stay busy?

I would officially like to redeem myself After closer examination, I also concur this is a cast copy. I think exoguy is right when he stated the word 'copy' has been removed. His other stuff is indeed junk.

ExoGuy.....Ever find out if yours was a copy? Its been a while and I have shown mine to a few people and most think it may be authentic. If and when I have the money I will send it in to be told it is fake or authentic.

pdm12772 .... No, I never confirmed whether it's a copy, but I strongly suspect it is. My colonials will probably go to auction someday, given that there are some better varieties among them. Unless I can remember to bring that "1788" to a big show in the interim, I'll let the cataloger decide.
If I do remember to seek an opinion, I'll try to recall this thread and let you know. Please, do likewise with yours. I'll be really surprised!
