One link I just read, if I read it right, stated that the the image's on the Vermont coin are similar to a British halfpenny, that was being circulated at the time .. but who the images are, on the Vermont, is not known.
On that British Halfpenny it does say George III .. this is a different coin

Actually starts Tuesday and goes through Saturday. There may have been some local pre-show events, like a Heritage auction this past weekend.

The bust on the Vermont does not represent a specific person, it is just similar to the bust of King George from the British half penny to keep the coin looking familiar to the populace. Coins with designs that were unfamiliar were often viewed with suspicion and either refused or taken at a discount. The original Vermont coppers had a completely different appearance but they quickly switched to the familiar bust and seated figure designs used on the British coins.

i always assumed it was king george like they didnt care to replace the design (although on some of the 1788 varities I do believe george was named on the coin)as in older dates as well

I really appreciate the good responses I am getting on this coin, I am learning a lot from the post and the reading I have been doing.
I am hoping all feel this is a authentic coin, because I did purchase it today. I do wonder why they are called Vermont coppers, to me it does not quite have the copper look of .. say a bust large cent.
I have a few coins I am thinking to send in to be slabbed, what are some thoughts on that ..

I had the same feeling when I acquired a fugio after having a number of large cents. Maybe the techniques or the impurities were different in the pre-Mint period, but 100% copper is 100% copper.

The people installing the dies and doing the striking would quite possibly often be illiterate and since both types of die were similar it is not too surprising that from time to time British halfpence dies and state copper dies would get muled together.

I concur, Ryder-29. I have only handled a couple of these, all of which are quite elusive, and lacking detail. Your coin appears cleaned, but not harshly. This was the only use of the obverse die, and had little life left at that. Rare? Yes. Not sure of exact population but, I can assure you, it's low. I would put your coin in the VG Details category for the cleaning. I would personally send this coin to PCGS. I will investigate further, and get back to you shortly. I want one Going to bed now, tired! ANA show
