I am a complete novice - I inherited quite a few sets of coins from my dad. The first set I'm interested in is the US Liberty coin set from 1986. There are three coins: a 1986 Liberty gold five dollar, a 1986 Liberty silver dollar, and a 1986 Liberty half dollar. I have at least 20 sets of these, all in their original blue packaging. I saw these exact sets on ebay sell (completed listings) for around $420 each. What would the best way be to go about selling these coins? Is it worth selling each set individually? Could I try to sell 5 at once or would it be better to find a local dealer and sell the collection? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

to CCF!

You could sell them on ebay & pay the fees. Or you could get your 50 posts & sell them here with no fees. I would be interested in a set. I'm sure other members would be also.

I think you need 250 posts to sell here. If you know what the sets sell for on ebay you can subtract the fees(12-15%) from that to get what you would net. Armed with that knowledge you could ask local coin dealers and/or bullion dealers what they would offer. Don't be afraid to counter their initial offers & keep in mind they buy to resell & have to make a profit.

Couple of the local coin shops, in my area would give 90% of melt value
for the gold coin, plus about $20 for the other two coins.

Which should put you right around the $400 range, and might be better than
ebay with fees and shipping.

What area or the country are you in. We may have members here that could point
you to a good dealer.

I am near the Pensacola Florida area .. and I know of a good dealer in
Lake Charles LA. area.

Edit: I should word that better .. I know good dealers in the pensacola area also.

What other sets do you have?

I am in southern california. I just spent a couple of hours going through the sets. It turns out I only have 17 of those aforementioned sets. I also have a couple of US Contitution Coin Sets and a World Cup USA 1994 Commerative set. These all seem to be in the same price range, around $400. There is also a US Mint 4 Coin Constitution set in a Mahogany Box, about $820 on ebay. The rest are mostly US Mint proof sets, US Mint uncirculated sets, 4 Uncirculated Susan B. Anthony 2-year sets, and other miscellaneous stuff. Anyone trustworthy here in southern ca? If I could get approximately 85% of the ebay price, it might be worth my while to sell to a reputable dealer. Once again, thanks for all the input.

Here in SE Illinois the dealer I use pays melt for gold and silver coins.
You will get more per set on E-bay and I would think you would want to sell them one at a time.
Or put em on e-bay at a buy it now price and let em buy 1 set or all 17.
And I also think you need 250 posts to be able to sell here.
There are other coin sites and groups on the net you can sell no matter how many posts.
You might also check out E-crater.
