I have been looking at this coin and have no experience with ancient coin. I thought I should ask the experts. I am thinking there is a good chance it is some sort of copy .. but it was in a collection with some other authentic older coins. Thank you in advance for any information you care to share Edited by GR58 08/04/2012 7:17 pm

I think the obverse of your "coin" is that of Constantine I, but, to be honest, I cannot be certain it is not one of the other of the Constantine Dynasty. The reverse I've seen before, but not on a late Imperial coin. If I could just recall where I've seen that symbol...
Anyway, I con't think your coin is genuine. Perhaps someone else will come along and ID the reverse or even prove me wrong.

I know what the reverse is. It's a coin from Judea, when Rome was in control.
The reverse resembles this one, Antoninus Felix, procurator of Judea. Two crossed shields and spears.
That's my opinion. I've seen this fake before a few months ago.

I've seen it before too, but I couldn't put my finger on it. The one you saw, was it with a Constantine obverse?

This piece shows up often, it is a fantasy piece of what is supposed to be Constantine I. The reverse doesn't exist for any coins of Constantine. Sorry but it's a fake.

If I recall correctly there was one like this posted here on the forum a while back.

You have a good memory, Doucet. I found one of these a year or two ago at a coin show and posted a picture of it. When this one was posted I just couldn't remember what was on the obverse of the one I posted back then. I remember it being identified as a fake. Lordymercy, my memory is just not what it used to be. I went back, but couldn't find the thread. Oh well, at least we all remember it as a fake.
And they say memory is the second thing to go. I can't remember what's the first!

The example posted on the forum earlier, which others remember but nobody posted links to, can be found here. There's another older thread with one here, though the reverse pic has expired. The reverse is based on a Judaea coin from the time of Nero.
