OH MY GOD. ULTIMATE FIND, GUYS.

*deep breath*

I will try to stop squealing now. The video of me on the security camera gaping and then literally jumping up and down in circles is going to be embarrassing enough (but oh so worth it).

So, I got into work today and opened the coin changer to count and found--a Vicksburg ATB CAM proof! Woo-hoo! This isn't unheard of (I have a 1986 proof nickel and a 1968 proof-or-prooflike penny), but certainly rare. Already, my day is on a good note!

I pick out a couple of wheaties, nothing special, and fill my changer. As the night goes on it gets emptier and emptier, until I decide I may as well open the customer-wrapped rolls of quarters we have on the safe and dump 'em in--

--AND OUT SPILLED HALF A ROLL'S WORTH OF State Quarter CAM PROOFS. (okay, not done with the screaming, sorry.) I grabbed another of the rolls and opened it--more!! The third roll--HOLY CRAP ON RYE TOAST, A TOTAL OF THIRTY-FIVE State Quarter CAM PROOFS, ALL IN MINT. 4-5 have fingerprints on them, but with luck there's a way to deal with that (if the answer is yes, somebody please say so; if it's no, give me a week to flail and THEN say no, please).

Think that's it? I don't ALLCAPS every day. THERE WERE ALSO FOUR BUCKS' WORTH OF SATIN FINISH QUARTERS FROM PHILADELPHIA IN THOSE ROLLS.

I always said I'd do a State Quarter set if I had a really, REALLY good reason. I, erm, guess I do now. (So: Folder? Flips? Booklet? Suggestions please?)

Two final notes, SPIT FIRE SAVE MATCHES, I am sorry for every awful thing I have ever said about the State Quarters program and how stupid I thought it was. These coins were meant to be seen in proof, and I wish more non-collectors had the chance to do so--the hobby would EXPLODE. They're simply lovely.

And: To the former owner, whoever you are and wherever you may be, I hope you are able to find out that your coins (most of them, anyway--where there were three rolls with 35 I'd bet my silver there were actually four rolls with 50) were rescued by someone who will give them a good home and treasure them. I don't think this was any kind of willing separation, and I promise to take care of them.

LOL John! If you collect satins, hang around. I'm giving myself til the end of vacation to decide if I want to keep them or trade them for CAMs/silver.

Oh and I should have mentioned--for anyone who knows about my shoebox full of jackleg equipment and is currently going because they know full well I don't have the equipment to handle such an influx of beauties, I promise I came up with a reasonable temporary solution. Each of the CAMs is in one of those little plastic coin baggies with a cotton facepad (ladies: those things you use to take off your makeup. Gentlemen: those vaguely ominous-looking little round pads of cotton your wife keeps in her vanity stand) wrapped around the coin inside the bag, and when I ran out of bags I laid a layer of facepads on top of the layers of wrapped coins, put the satins on top not touching each other, and then laid another layer of facepads on top of that. There are state secrets that aren't protected this well.

Very nice find. But, I believe the cotton balls can cause hairlines.

Chris, they're not cotton balls: http://www.textileworld.com/Article...tonround.jpg Mine have sealed edges, but they've got the same plain surface. Is this still a problem, or should it be "cushiony" enough?

Well. You certainly are closer to a State Quarter set from circulation! Nice finds!

Very nice indeed. You can try acetone on the fingerprints, but if they are tarnished into the metal, it likely wont do much. But give it a shot.

Congrats on the great finds!

And you should weigh each quarter to see if they are silver or not. The silver ones are heavier.

Wquinn, I see clad edges on the CAM proofs (didn't look at the satins), but the rolls as a whole and all of the CAMs singly were significantly heavier than a regular roll. I'm not sure if they use a different metal, if they're thicker, or if it's just psychological (it feels heavier because it's different-looking, therefore I expect it to feel different), but I'm pretty sure they're unusual-but-clad.

To everyone who wants pics: I took a few last night that didn't turn out so great, and I go on vacation tomorrow morning. When I get back I promise I will clear off the back porch and try a few in daylight when I put the whole set in (flips? album? Folder? Other? HELP!), but an incandescent bulb is making everything turn out blurry and, of course, reflective (The Pitfalls Of Photographing Proofs).

They don't, they aren't, and it is.

If they're fresh prints acetone may take the oil off the coins and remove the print .Soak them sooner than later.(30 seconds in more than enough time) If the print is old it may be permanent.
Congrats on the find!
