Hi,

I own this 1757 8 Escudo Coin from Mexico. I think it features King Ferdinand of Spain and it was minted in Mexico City. Its in good condition, around 3.7cm in diameter and its 0.2mm thick...
Do you have a idea of the value of the coin?

If anyone needs better pictures don't hesitate to ask.

Many Thanks,

Kieran

I'm not sure, but look at the top of the coin. It seems that there is something that has been attached to the coin to make it able to function as a necklace. Do you know if that was the case for this coin?

The image optimiser dosn't seem to work, the dropbox links work now so they will show you the reverse side. The coin comes with a ring and bezel although I don't know what that was used for.

I found a coin similar to yours on the NGC website. Your identification of the coins is close. Its a Guatemala 8 Escudos.

In order to post the link I would need the staff's permission. I can only tell you that you can copy and paste the definition of the coin that I listed. Keep in mind that the coin is different but of the same symbol as they show an error coin. click on the NGC link. It should be the first result on google.

Be sure to type in value at the end of the definition otherwise you will get a coin that is something else entirely.

Sorry I can't assist you with value or collector's. I just did my research and discovered the information on the web. Perhaps someone else on the site will reply and answer your question.

Try HA (Heritage Auctions) they have a website. I posted some pictures of a Morgan dollar that I had inherited to them. They only allow six images but they might be able to assist you and determine the value of the coin. try contact us then click on appraisel questions and at the bottom is listed "click here to request a free auction estimate." that's about the best I can do.

Hey!
I have two pieces of bad news and one piece of good news.
If real, your coin is definetly cleaned.
Also, your coin is in a pendant state right now. This means that the coin is severly damaged. You should contact your local jelwer and ask on possible options as to how to take it out. Who knows, maybe your coin is now permanently damaged. The good news however, is if taken out succesfully, this coin can be worth quite a bit.

Kfitzgerald, the coin is from Mexico CIty, not Guatemala. Note the "Mo" mintmark on both sides of the bottom of the wreath on the shield side. If the coin is real, it is a 3 year only type coin in high demand from people putting together type sets of 8 Escudos. Your coin exhibits a known disgnostic for that style (the error in the E and N of FERDIND) and if real is quite valuable. I would suggest you have a reputable dealer or yourself send the coin to NCS (the conservation subsidiary of NGC) to be removed from the mount and then slabbed. Even with a "VF details, Genuine, improperty cleaned/ex jewelry" designation, you are talking about a valuable coin.
