Nice luster remaining but sure is a lot of wear on the ear and cheek bone. I would have said EF-40 without the luster but since there is still some red it's got to be an AU-50 coin.

You all are generous! The ear is completely worn into the hair, I'd barely give the front an EF-40. To me, AU-58 is a single finger print, AU-55 is about ten, and AU-50 is a whole lot of prints but only a tiny bit of wear, scuff, etc. When I see copper removed by wear, I can't get above EF.

Just a bit too much wear for AU.

If the obverse has heavy wear (EF-40), why doesn't the reverse have the same amount?

To me, AU-58 is a single finger print

A fingerprint will not drop a coin from MS grades without also having wear. There are plenty of MS coins with fingerprints although the prints will limit the grade somewhat, especially on copper. By definition, an AU coin will have the initial signs of wear on the high points.

I like it at AU50. It's got some character with that red left so you want to price it better than that for the market. Think of toning premiums, same logic.
