This sounds like a challenge. I accept. This series is one of the harder ones to grade. Nickel is a lot harder than silver. A lot of this series was poorly struck as a result. This one however looks like a good strike (despite two pearls missing) The tip of the moustach is well defined and most of the crown. However, if you look at the fields, you will see many "ding" marks. This is a well struck but well circulated coin. I have MS nickels that look "worse" then this one. But the fields on my MS look spectacular. The fields give this one away.I would have to go EF.

Too much wear to be MS Could be a weak strike ( There should be 2 more Perls on the left hand side of the centre diamond) Some wear on the high points and signs of obvious circulation. Nice eye appeal tho. EF 40 - XF 45

I don't see enough wear to bring it down to an EF. I actually think it is just shy of MS. So I'll go AU 55.

This series is living up to its reputation. We have a grade spread of 22 points (EF-40 to MS-62)...
I don't have the coin in hand yet, but it was in a NGC MS-60 slab. I thought it looked somewhat weakly struck. From the digital pictures alone, I thought it was anywhere from AU-50 to MS-62. I'll have a better idea once it is in hand, to gauge the fields and lustre (photos can be deceiving). But, for $65, even if it is AU-50, I thought it was a good deal, with nice eye-appeal.

How do you determine what is a weak strike? What do you look for?

That is tough. The vertical beads at the top of the crown look a bit worn at the base. Can that also be a consequence of weak strike?
I think I see slight rub marks on the shoulder ribbon, and the highest points of the leaves on the reverse. But, this is definitely close to MS-60.
AU-58?

NGC (I presume it's an NGC graded coin) most likely graded it ms60 or slightly higher.
I'm very confident ICCS would grade it between au50 and au58.
