Had a quick flick through there is a 38 crown with a 37 pic, you would be upset if you were bidding on that lot.

Just reinforces why I will probably never do auction house bidding, oh and the point that they are super expensive coins, and well out of my budget.

email reply from them.

The lots in question were submitted as mint sport errors (ie created errors).

This is now being further investigated at this point to determine if this is so.

Assuming they are mint sport manufactured errors (and presumably smuggled out), does the mint still have ownership of the coins, seeing as they were not standard issues?
I recall the double head 50 cent coins from the 1980's and apparently the mint confiscated one that was to be auctioned.
Does the Mint have a policy in regards to unoffical strikings, and the distribution of such products?

Probably, unless whoever made it put a coin of the same denomination in the with the rest to 'pay' for it.
But I assume that their contracts would say that there's no unauthorised use of machinery for your own gain, and you'd probably risk getting sacked if you tried.

I think someone who worked at the mint (or maybe it was a rolling and distribution company) got into trouble recently when something like 200 error coins were found at their house. They'd been selling them I think.

I have now received a reply from IAG suggesting that the errors were submitted as "mint sport" and that their true source is now under investigation.

All public servants must adhere to the Australian Public Service Code of Conduct. Part of that is "not make improper use of the employee's duties, status, power or authority,
in order to gain, or seek to gain, a benefit or advantage for the employee or for any other person"

I would say using mint equipment to 'fabricate' error coins is a breach of that part and would be an offence punishable with possible dismissal or demotion or fine.

Its a little bit concerning that only after accepting the coins, publishing them in a catalogue and then receiving conplaints do IAG investigate them. You would like to think better of them

The fact that the second "strike" has a design in reverse is proof that a second coin was used. not Mint equipment.

Here's my response to the first email I got from IAG:

Thank you for your reply. Another thing to keep in mind is that on a true double strike the first strike is usually almost completely obliterated by the second strike due to the high striking pressure of a coin press. In the case of the lots in your auction this is not the case, the initial strike is still almost completely present. This suggests the "brockage" strike was applied with something with much lower pressure than a coin press.

You should also be aware that there has been a seller on ebay selling these sorts of damaged coins for several months now. You can see their feedback and a link to one of their past sales here:

I probably should'nt be showing this here as I believe there are sellers of PMD coins using this forum, they think they are flying under the radar so to speak so I won't say exactly how I did this but I will say a vice does not have enough pressure.

In good news I've heard from IAG and these lots have been withdrawn from the auction. Kudos to Paul and the team at IAG.
