OK I was looking though my collection today at some of my older purchases, specifically at a Capped Bust Half Dime that I purchased five years back when I just started collecting at an auction. I noticed that something was not right about it and that it just didn't match up with other examples that I had. I feel really stupid for buying a counterfeit and then not realizing it for years after the fact. Luckily I haven't lost much money on it and it is part of my tuition, learning from my mistakes. Your thoughts ..... please feel free to tell me the good, the bad, and the ugly. Edited by Joe2007 08/12/2012 10:42 pm

Joe, what are you seeing that makes you think it is counterfeit? I see a coin that has been cleaned and has a couple problems but nothing that screams fake.

Liberty on the headband is unreadable, the lettering on the reverse is off (look at the S near 12:00), and take a look at the right hand wing on the reverse.

Nothing jumps out at me either. Sure it has some cleaning and a gouges or hits on the obv, perhaps not a prime specimen, but nothing telling me "Made in China" either.

As far as the S at 1200, my PCGS AU53 1832 has that exact S, so I would attribute that to the die.

The filled S is normal for your die pair, the right wing is normal also as the back of your coin has a clashed die. Here is a photo of an MS coin with the same diagnostics. I believe your coin IS genuine.

Same die crack through the "T" and running to the banner as well. Looks legitimate to me.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I am relieved that you think it is genuine. I bought it for $35 back in 2008.Is there a variety number for these die diagnostics like there are for Capped Bust Halves? Again I greatly appreciate your help.

Yes .... There's a pretty exhaustive list published somewhere on the web, with links to pictures of the varieties.
I'll see if I can find it and post the link.

Just for my own curiosity, what would cause "liberty" to look like it was done using the Cyrillic alphabet?

LIBERTY looks perfectly normal to me, it is incuse instead of being in relief. I think what you are seeing is a duality optical illusion, like the young lady/old lady illusion.

You are absolutely correct. I think the flattening effect of it being a picture made it worse. Once I crossed my eyes and cocked my head it looked perfectly fine.
