1921, I don't buy the Charlton every year, perhaps only once every 4/5 years since my only interest is business strikes (1858-1967) and prices in most categories don't change much. Unless of course there are a lot of new varieties that come to light in a short period of time that Charlton acknowledges.

It that case that is the best bet...me I just like waiting for it to come out more than anything (like a kid at Christmas the hype)...I just like the trip to my local book store and to see if any new coins where added or if there was any major price shifts. I prefer the token/paper money price guides a lot more to learn in that area...for me anyway.

Because of the spin-off of the NCLT, Charlton is able to include more and more varieties every year. For example, in the last 5 years they expanded the 50c Far/Near date varieties greatly.

Also, every year they do an extensive back of book varieties section on one denomination/monarch.

Unless you already know (for example) all the Victorian 5c varieties, then these sections are very helpful. Although they may raise more questions than they answer.

Why do they define only one 1858 5c obverse when clearly there must be at least two (aligned CANADA and misaligned CANADA)?

You see I know very little in that area!! I hope they have a section on the 50 cent pieces this year. I really enjoy collecting this denomination. I am hoping to add some nice tokens to my collection this year as well. Just have to find them now...lolll. But hey that is the fun chasing is it not.

CCN Trends is the source for business-strike pricing. Charlton provides the mintages, variety IDing pics (they need to concentrate more on that), and old specimen pricing. I hardly ever look at Charlton's business-strike prices.

CCN should consider adding an SP column.

Ditto. Also http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php gets updated more frequently than Charlton which is obviously only annually :-).
