Ok I've been up and down the internet and discussed the issue with a few LCS and no one has the answer. Why is this year such a high demand high priced item? Mintage overall or for for the series have nothing to do with. My only conclusion is that maybe this year suffered a great melting fate....any one confirm my theory or actually know whats up with that year?

That's a very good question. I think you might be right about the mass melting. It is very obvious that this is waay harder to find than other Victorian coins with comparable mintages.

I'm still looking for one...

Apparently a shipment of 1889 Canadian dimes was lost in a shipwreck whilst coming over from United Kingdom where they were minted, obviously not all of them though as most 1889 dimes found are in very worn condition. Hope this helps and good luck with your search!

certainly makes for a good detective story. There is a possibility that the mintage figure could be wrong and the coins minted in 1889 were mostly dated 1888. Wonder if the Royal Mint repoort of 1890 would be of help?
