I'm new to this site, but I saw a Morgan that looked similar to mine get graded MS64, but mine (1886) probably has a few more scratches. If I recall right, people normally grade from pictures. However, the Morgan is in a cardboard holder, so do I get a clean surface, clean hands, take it out of its holder and take some pictures of it? I graded it from 50-60, but I just grade according to the official Red Book. Plus, it has a few scratches which might take it down a bit. How would I reduce damage to it when I take it out of its holder? Obviously it's not like it is going to lose half of it's value when I take it out but how do I handle it good so I can get good pictures of it?

K, and then just put it in a new holder when I'm done...I'll see if I can get some good pictures later, in an hour or two.

If I have no other cardboard holders that size, do I put it back in the old one? I haven't taken it out yet, but would just be taking a few staples out.

Hold it over a soft surface. A towel if nothing else is available. Halves and dollars are heavy and easily prone to get a rim bump if dropped.

but what holder do I put it in when I'm done, if I have no other that same size? I could put it back in the old one, if that's no problem...

Carefully remove the staples from the old holder, remove coin carefully. Take photos, carefully place coin back in old holder, then restaple.

Hopefully the images should be clear enough; there are scratches, but it's still shiny with the cartwheel effect. I have a guess about where it should be, but I'll see what you guys think. In preview, first pic larger, not sure why, but I'll see how it turns out.

Not sure if there is enough light in those pics, but hopefully you can see them, or I can try to get them larger. Also...how do you edit posts so I don't have to double post sometimes when I think of something after I've posted?

It's hard to tell with these pictures, but I would say this coin is a slider.

I cant really make out the details from the pictures. But from what I see I think your coin is MS-60,61? Looks like a nice Morgan to me

It's a tough call from the photos, but I would say it's either a slider with very little wear or MS64 minimum. There are very few contact marks from what I see. Better quality pictures are needed to really offer an accurate grade on this.

I couldn't really decide, so I went with AU-58. Better pictures would definitely help

Well, there's a small nick under the eye, and scratches in front of the face...it's a nice coin, but not sure how much those blemishes take it down. I got it maybe a year or two ago for $33.50
